Title: On Lateness
Fandom: Kingsman
Pairing/Characters: Gazelle/Roxy Morton, Richmond Valentine
Summary: An unexpected encounter on campus.
Rating: PG
Length: Short (1,760 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: An unusual pair for me but I like to branch out from time to time. This is based on an American (and also outdated) university experience and I'm afraid I don't know a whole lot about TAs (only one of my profs ever had one), so apologies in advance for any mistakes there.  Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt: Gazelle blinked at her. “You remember me?” She sounded surprised, in that I-try-very-hard-not-to-take-anything-too-seriously way Roxy remembered her having.

Of course she remembered. Gazelle always sat at the back of the classroom, the seat beside her always empty, and she would prop her legs up on it and survey the room through the curtain of her hair in a listless fashion that did little to disguise how smart she was and how much she really did care about getting an education. Her legs were bright and knife sharp, like her smile and her eyes and her tongue- when Roxy coaxed her into speaking during class, that was. Gazelle was very hard to forget indeed.

When Oscar season comes around I'm always pretty uninterested in most of the nominees but I always end up having to watch a few anyway.

I just saw Manchester By the Sea and... wow.  It was exactly what I expected.  Fine from a technical standpoint, not all that well put together in my opinion but definitely your classic Accomplished look-how-good movie, and so very, very boring.  I swear the same thing happens every couple of years.  Some drab, depressing movie gets made about a white guy who has a depression beard and acts like a jerk, and the academy flaps around like, "So innovative!"  And it's just not?

That said, I'd be interested to hear what anyone who liked it thought was good about it.  I do understand that a movie can be good without being enjoyable to watch, but this movie just wasn't saying anything new.

Guess who's been forgetting to post regularly again?  It's me!

I'm going to do a post for the shows I'm watching soon.  I'm mainly keeping up with Lucifer (on hiatus until May, sadly, but they got picked up for a third season, so I'm happy about that) and Shadowhunters, but I watched A Series of Unfortunate Events and The OA, I'm just getting caught up on Ripper Street, and I've started Frontier.  So this is my reminder to myself to do that.

While I'm getting that together, though, here's a meme I snagged from [livejournal.com profile] megan_moonlight!

Send me a number and I will tell you:

1. Character in my fandoms that I think I’m most like.
2. What character archetype am I attracted to?
3. First ever ship and why.
4. How much has your life change ever since you started fangirling/fanboying?
5. Top 3 Favorite TV shows.
6. Top 3 Favorite movies.
7. Top 3 Favorite books.
8. Dream crossover?
9. Character death you still haven’t moved on yet?
10. Craziest fangirl/fanboy moment?
11. Ever cosplayed a character/dream cosplay?
12. Make me choose between two characters. (Oh god, please don't be a big meanie!)
13. Make me choose between two ships. (No really, please don't be a big meanie!)
14. Favorite fanfiction read/written.
15. Most loathed character. EVER.
16. Favorite villain/s.
17. A show you used to love but eventually hated or vice-versa.
18. A character you used to love but eventually hated or vice-versa.
19. A ship you used to love but eventually hated or vice-versa.
20. Your ultimate OTP?
21. Any fandom related question you can think of. :)

Title: So Fair a Gift
Fandom: Kingsman
Pairing/Characters: Eggsy Unwin/Harry Hart, Roxy Morton
Summary: Eggsy is getting a little tired of waiting for a certain someone to introduce himself.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Short (2,675 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: This is a short AU I wrote a while ago and then forgot about. It's (loosely) based on a prompt from this post: “I am a ballet dancer and I see you every time I perform in the first row and there are flowers in my room every time I perform when will you finally introduce yourself” AU. I've done a lot of theater but very little dance, so I may be making some incorrect assumptions. The title is from, "Your soul is a beautiful thing, child. No emperor received so fair a gift. The angels wept to-night” from Phantom of the Opera, because of course I went there.  Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt: It had been a couple of weeks- all right, three weeks and a day- since Eggsy saw the man first. Eggsy didn’t often look at the audience- it was distracting and unprofessional- but on that particular night Eggsy just happened to glance over and there he was, sitting in the front row with this incredibly intense look on his face. He was well fit, wearing a tuxedo that hugged his broad shoulders and surprisingly slim waist just as tightly as Eggsy would rather like to, with faintly greying hair and these dark, dark eyes.

I'd missed quite a few episodes of this show, and I've been (slowly) getting caught up.  I just love it so much in spite of myself, and I really wish there were more people around who liked it, especially now.

Ever since the show first came along (and for a while before that with other vaguely comparable shows, like Forever) I've been whining and complaining about how much I wanted a show like Lucifer- one with a male lead character who has a lot of exes/current liasons over the course of the show- to just casually turn out to have one (or several) such ex(es) be another man.

And just a couple episodes ago, Lucifer did exactly that!

It's not exactly groundbreaking as far as bi representation goes, but it was still really cool to see that when I'd wanted it to happen so much.  (Although now that I'm on the subject it does bother me that this show gets no credit whatsoever from a representation standpoint even though it's really quite diverse.  It only had the one major character who was a white guy to begin with, and now he is in fact canonically Not Straight... But such is life.)

Does anyone know if you can import new entries to dreamwidth after you've imported your journal already?

I really wish livejournal cross-posted to dreamwidth, because posting here was much easier for me while I was doing the meme (compared to posting on dreamwidth and cross-posting here), and now I'm really behind.

Title: Snowbound
Fandom: Kingsman
Pairing/Characters: Eggsy Unwin/Harry Hart, Merlin, Original Characters
Summary: Considering how many times Harry has almost died in the field, it would be silly to call this his worst mission. It rather feels like it is, though.
Rating: NC-17
Length: Medium (6,033 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt: “Wouldn’t it be easier if I was-” Eggsy cleared his throat again- “Harry’s- you know- his date?” Eggsy’s cheeks reddened slightly, but he held his chin high.

Harry opened his mouth to protest, but before he could get anything out Merlin said, “Very good, Eggsy. You’re exactly right. Those are precisely the covers I’ve built for you.” He held out files to both of them. “Happy reading.”

Favourite character that has been with you the longest? (from [livejournal.com profile] verdande_mi)

Enjolras from Les Miserables.  I grew up loving the musical, read an abridged version of the book at seven and the unabridged version at eleven.  I've always been crazy about Enjolras.  He's still my favorite character from Les Mis and Les Mis is still one of my favorite things.

I went to see xXx: The Return of Xander Cage and let me tell you I thought it was fantastic.

In general the xXx movies have always brought out a slightly juvenile side of me that is 100% there for a cross between James Bond and the X-Games and wow did this movie not disappoint on that score, but there was also more to it than that.  All the action was great, all the characters were great, Donnie Yen was especially great (and Xiang's dynamic with Xander Cage really did it for me you guys) and there were so many women!

Like, I'm not going to claim it was some kind of feminist utopia, it's xXx, but there were three major female characters who were all well developed, each kickass in a different way, and really supportive of each other- and there were multiple minor female characters none of whom died for man-pain.  I can't really think of another action movie that can say the same, honestly.

Anyway, I think it's a shame that it's not getting much love.  It's not a perfect movie but it was really entertaining!  I spent the whole movie with a stupid grin on my face, and I shipped so many people.

Conversely, what's a trope/cliche/character type you really enjoy? (from [livejournal.com profile] whimsicalnixie)

In fanfiction, I just love tropes and cliches in general.  I love seeing different writers' takes on the some concept, and I love all the fascinating things they can do.

In regular fiction, I'm a little more bored with tropes, but since I answered the previous one for regular fiction, I'm going to try to do it for this question to, so...

As a companion/comparison to yesterday's answer, I really like a quality "everyman" character who gets really good development and becomes a really cool character.  Daniel Jackson is a great example.  So is Rory Williams.  I like seeing a more or less regular person go through a lot and become someone extraordinary.

What's a fictional trope/cliche/character type you can't stand? (from [livejournal.com profile] whimsicalnixie)

I really dislike the character type- mainly found in sci-fi and fantasy genres- that has really cool powers or the opportunity to go an awesome adventure, and spends all their time whining about how they just want to be a normal person who does normal things.

It can be effective, of course (for instance, in early Supernatural Sam's decision to leave hunting to live a normal life made a really interesting contrast to his brother, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer did a really good job of selling how hard her life was, making it easier to understand why she might wish she could have regular teenage worries instead) and I'm not saying that on a case by case basis it doesn't work- I'm talking about it as a basic trope that writers pull out time and time again in the genre- and as a trope I really dislike it.  I don't know why they think fans of what is essentially escapist fiction would find a protagonist like that compelling.

Like, I'd be a wizard if I could.  I'd travel with the doctor if I could.  At least a little part of most nerds want to do these things and like to imagine that they'd be awesome at it and have a great time, and watching someone who actually can do magic or whatever conclude that it's much more important to just go to work tomorrow instead is sort of painful.

Again, it's obviously a trope that works in some situations, but I've quit reading books because of it in the past, so I'd say it qualifies as something I can't stand.

Title: The Vacation
Fandom: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Pairing/Characters: Percival Graves + Tina Goldstein, Seraphina Picquery
Summary: Graves isn't going to make this mistake again.
Rating: PG
Length: Short (1,302 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Inspired by a conversation with icecream_junkie (I did write it after all!); ghis is not a particularly serious fic (in any sense of the term), it’s not historically accurate and probably not totally in line with Harry Potter lore either, and I doubt it's particularly original- but I’m rather pleased with it for all that, and I wanted to get it out there.
Excerpt: A few clerks noticed the paperwork and had a good laugh at the thought of Percival Graves going on vacation. They took bets on when he would change his mind, what crisis would erupt to keep him in New York, whether he would forget his plans to leave entirely- if indeed he had made those plans to begin with. A few suggested that someone must have filed the forms for Graves without consulting him- in an effort to get him to decompress, most likely, that would end in failure.
So when Graves arrived at work as expected on the day his vacation was to have begun, no one was surprised or suspicious. Some money exchanged hands on the lower levels, and no one on the higher levels was even sure he’d been leaving in the first place.

Is there a fandom/pairing/character you always wanted to write a fic about but haven't yet? (from [personal profile] megan_moonlight)

There are quite a few of these, for me- but I think the most obvious is Due South.  I love the show, the characters, and all the great fics and I've always wanted to write one, but I've just never been able to make it happen.

What are your favorite characters and pairings to write? (from [livejournal.com profile] megan_moonlight)

Right now I would say Harry and Eggsy- and the Kingsman characters in general.

I'm usually pretty eclectic in terms of what show/movie/book series I'll get attached to enough to write fanfiction about, but if I do I try to like all the characters (or at least write a version of all the characters that I can like) and I usually ship multiple pairings, so it's a bit difficult to narrow it down beyond what I'm into at the moment.

Has there ever been a character you at first really didn't like, but then they grew on you? (from [livejournal.com profile] whimsicalnixie)

I've had more than just one of these, to be sure.  I often find replacement characters who come in after another has died or been written out hard to get attached to, but I almost always warm to them in the end.

Probably the best example is Ezri Dax on Deep Space Nine.  I could not have been more bitter about what happened to Jadzia, and Ezri seemed like such a poor substitute- but once I gave her a chance I thought she was actually quite lovely.
