Title: Go On Forever
Fandom: Doctor Who and Torchwood
Pairing/Characters: Ianto Jones/Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones/Martha Jones, Tish Jones, Tenth Doctor, the Master, Gwen Cooper
Summary: Jack's thoughts on the end of the world.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Short (1,078 words)
Disclaimer: Not mine.
Notes/Warnings: Written for my hc_bingo square apocalypse (my card is here).  This is set around the Year That Never Was, so warnings for a) temporary character death and the end of the world and so on and b) me not having seen these episodes in a long time.  There could be inconsistancies.
Excerpt: Jack had tried, in the beginning, to talk about his team objectively, putting no more emphasis on Ianto than any of the others- but something had eventually slipped through. Before he knew it, he’d told Tish about all the good times, and when those were exhausted he’d told her about the bad ones. He’d told her about the things both of them had done wrong, and about the things he bitterly regretted not doing.

Tish said, “When this is over, ask him out on a date.”

Jack didn’t say, “This won’t ever be over.” That was one of the things they never said.

Couple you shipped only after a long time:

Well, a long time is relative, but I'd say maybe Amy/Rory on Doctor Who.  See, in the beginning, it was all Amy and Eleven besties/almost shippiness, and it seemed like Rory was just going to be Mickey Smith all over again.  But then, from "Amy's Choice" on he absolutely wasn't.  Rory turned out to be such an amazing man, and he and Amy had such a beautiful marriage- I love them, but I think it took until Rory stopped having doubts for me to stop having doubts.

And then they broke my heart a bunch of times, but whatever.  It's Doctor Who.  That happens.

A character you don't like seeing paired with anyone else:

I suppose this could mean a character I only like gen with, but it's hard to think of one off the top of my head.  Like a lot of people, shippy fic is at least 90% of what I read, so if I'm reading fic for a character, I usually have at least one ship for them.  So I'm taking this to mean a character I only like one pairing for.

So, I'm in a minority here, but I really only like Jack Harkness with Ianto.  I mean, he gets an exception for Real!Jack because that guy is so sweet and gorgeous and perfect and guh- everybody gets him as an exception.   I like Ianto with other people, mainly John Hart and maybe Ten (there are some awesome Ianto/Real!Jack fics out there too, FYI), but Jack... not so much.  I don't really know why, because lots of people ship Jack with pretty much everyone, and that makes sense.

A crossover pairing you think would work:

First of all, I love crossover pairings, but they seem to be fairly rare.  A lot of the time, writers will take two fandoms with similar couples and sort of cross-pair the characters for a while, but at the end of the story, it seems the characters have to end up with people from their fandom.  You get something similar with crossovers between fandoms that have the same actor/actress.  I understand this get-together trope, I even like it and might use it myself one day- it's just that what I most love are crossover pairings where nobody is using anybody as a stand-in for anybody else- it's just two people from different fandoms that would suit each other really well.

I think my favorites so far are Cabin Pressure/Sherlock crossovers with Arthur Shappey/Molly Hooper.  Crossovers between those two fandoms are pretty common, and Martin/Molly is popular too, for obvious reasons, but I always thought she and Arthur would have been well suited.

Though not necessarily a pairing, I also want to re-proclaim my undying love for Doctor Who crossovers with characters from other fandoms as companions.  That is never not cool.

Also from [livejournal.com profile] liliannabelle, Donna

How I feel about this character: I love her.  She's among my favorite companions- which isn't technically saying much because I love a lot of the companions, but she's still amazing.
My het ship: I never really shipped with Donna, to tell you the truth.
My fem/slash ship: See above.
Any OTP? Nope.
My non-romantic ship for this character: She and Ten, absolutely.  They were so awesome together.
Any unpopular opinions? None that I know of.
My favorite plot-line for this character: I really loved "Turn Left."  I love how much difference one decision of hers was shown to have made, because she is so damned important.
Something I wish would happen/had happened to this character: Like Ten, I would have liked a better send-off for Donna.  She was awesome, and what went down was pretty damn tragic.
A crossover ship or interaction I would love to see for this character: I can't think of any specific one, but Donna is so much fun I'm sure it would be great to see her interact with other characters.  Especially if she felt the need to tell said other character what for.  And it's Donna, so she almost certainly would.
A head canon fact: And she lived happily ever after.

From [livejournal.com profile] liliannabelle, Ten

How I feel about this character: He's not my favorite Doctor, but I love him.  He was sort of my first, in that I had seen other Doctors, but I didn't start to pay attention until Ten, and then I went back and started watching earlier.
My het ship: I never really liked the Doctor with one of his companions until Eleven/River happened, but I did really enjoy the human Doctor and Joan Redfern's relationship.
My fem/slash ship: Doctor/Master.  Most of the fanfiction that converted me to Doctor/Master concerns earlier Doctors and Masters, so I like Ten/Simm!Master more as an incidental thing, in that I like the Doctor with Time Lords period, and the Master is the one you can usually count on to not be as dead as you thought.
Any OTP? Not really.
My non-romantic ship for this character: Donna Noble.  They had such a great dynamic.
Any unpopular opinions? Not that I know of.
My favorite plot-line for this character: I really enjoyed the episodes with him in human form, and also the Master episodes- particularly "Utopia."  Jacobi!Master is a favorite of mine.
Something I wish would happen/had happened to this character: I thought his final episode was sort of... messy.  I have no idea what would fix it, really, I just know I felt it was a disappointing goodbye.  Too drawn out, and yet weirdly sudden, if that makes sense.
A crossover ship or interaction I would love to see for this character: I love crossovers with characters from other series as companions, period.  Also, though it isn't much of a crossover, I love stories where Ianto Jones is a companion.
A head canon fact: I can't really think of one.

Favorite characters: My favorite Doctors are Eleven and Eight, but I love Ten, Nine and Five too; Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Sarah Jane Smith, Jack Harkness (I've had problems with him since Torchwood, but when he was first introduced in "The Empty Child" I loved him like you wouldn't believe), Martha Jones, Sally Sparrow, Donna Noble, River Song, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Canton Delaware III
OTP(s): Doctor/Master, Eleven/River, Amy/Rory, Jenny/Vastra
Funniest character: Simm!Master was pretty hilarious, in a creepy way.  I think the Doctor is funny too, of course.
Prettiest character: Amy, probably, although Clara is pretty damn pretty.  Also, Martha's sister Tish was gorgeous.
Most badass character: I really love Canton Delaware III; he was pretty badass (and also he just wanted to get married).  But the thing I love about Doctor Who is that you don't have to be traditionally tough to be badass- a shop girl is as likely to save the world as a secret agent.  All the companions are badass.
Most annoying character: I wasn't favorably impressed by Queen Elizabeth in "The Day of the Doctor."  Queen Elizabeth was an awesome lady, and I think they could have handled her better.
My favorite thing that has happened so far: Hard to say.  I like the larger ideas behind the series more than any specific event, and I just love the idea of Doctor Who.  I love the spirit behind it, and the way the Doctor brings out the hero in everyone.
What I would most like to see happen next: I'd like a Doctor that wasn't a white man someday.  There's no way to say it that doesn't sound critical and I actually don't feel that way- I love so many of the actors who have played the part already, it would just be nice to see something new.  I heard once that Chiwetel Ejiofor had been talked about to play the Doctor, and he would have been fantastic.  Also, Jaime Murray would be fantastic.  I'm just saying.

Title: The Impossible House
Fandom: Once Upon a Time
Pairing/Characters: Belle/Rumplestiltskin, Baelfire; mentions of Aurora/Mulan, Hook and Jefferson.
Summary: Doctor Who AU: Belle is a Time Lady and she wants Rumplestiltskin to come with her.
Rating: G
Length: Short (2,714 words)
Disclaimer: Neither Once Upon a Time nor Doctor Who belongs to me.
Notes/Warnings: Rumplestiltskin here is meant to come from a middle ages-ish period, but no effort has been made to be historically accurate.  This is a just a bit of fun, and likewise not really intended to be part of a larger series.  Also, it confuses the heck out of me that there are two spellings for Rumplestiltskin- I've gone with the spelling in AO3's tags for continuity's sake, but... *shrugs*
Excerpt: Nothing much ever happened to Rumplestiltskin. His was an ordinary life. A boring life, perhaps- but Rumplestiltskin told himself that he didn’t mind if his life was boring, so long as it was safe; since the war, and everything that happened after, he considered safe the thing to be. Most of the time, he even believed it. And then the Librarian came along.

Title: Brave New World
Fandom: Doctor Who/The Wild Wild West
Pairing/Characters: Amy Pond/Rory Williams, Artemus Gordon/James West, Eleven, Jack Harkness; mentions of Lily Fortune (and Artie/Lily)
Summary: Artie was a companion of the Doctor.  Jim is trying to figure some things out.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Medium (6,932 words)
Disclaimer: Doctor Who and The Wild Wild West do not belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: This includes mentions of M-preg.  You can read my somewhat tangential placement of this story in DW canon here.
Excerpt: “I did want to… warn you, I suppose. It’s just that, ‘Jim, I won’t technically be born for a couple thousand years,’ is really difficult to work into a conversation. Also, I only half believed that he’d ever come back for me.”

So, I did my best to weave this story into the Doctor Who timeline in ways that I would like to be readily obvious- but I'm just not as good at the Doctor Who timeline as I'd like to be, so I'm gonna try to explain it:

Most of this story takes place somewhere between “The God Complex” and “The Wedding of River Song”, referencing Artie as a companion of the Eighth Doctor anytime before the Time War started. The final scene takes place in a space which may or may not exist between “Flesh and Stone” and “The Vampires of Venice.” I don’t have too much trouble imagining that Amy could have convinced the Doctor to take her one more place before picking up Rory- if that doesn’t work for you, call it an A.U.

I’m posting a Doctor Who/The Wild Wild West crossover fic on AO3 (if you're interested, you can read it here) but I'm going to be posting some of my author's notes here so they don't clutter up the fic, so that's what those are about.

In related news, I'd like to enthusiastically recommend a Eight/Jacobi!Master fic: Cafestrolvalva by x-los. If you haven’t read it, you should check it out. It’s really, really great.

A show you plan on watching

I'm trying to watch all of Doctor Who from the beginning, which is a pretty serious undertaking.  It's slow going, but I'm enjoying it.  I'm still on the first doctor, and I'm sort of marveling at a) what a snaky dude he is and b) how much the Daleks used to talk.  Yeah, theirs is one arc of many, but now I get why the modern Daleks speak in such short sentences, if they use more than one word at all.  If they say a big hunk of dialogue in those voices, you're only going to understand maybe a quarter of it- if that.  Anyway, I'm having fun with it.

I get to put up the 2014 Doctor Who calender I got in London.  Yay!

January is the First Doctor, naturally.  All the months except December have one of the Doctors surrounded by the major series villains.  January also has a Dalek, some other robotic creatures, and what looks like a dude in a creepy bumblebee costume.  Anyone know the story on the bumblebee dude?  I'm going to buckle down and watch the really old seasons of Doctor Who sometime soon, so hopefully I'll be able to answer this question myself before too long, but still.

Anyway, hope everyone had a good time!

I'm caught up on all my new shows!  And I even saw The Day of the Doctor!  It is a momentous occasion (for me) and we'll see if I can maintain this (I probably can't).  I haven't seen tonight's Almost Human, but that doesn't constitute a backlog, so there.

The Day of the Doctor )

Non-spoilery question for those more active in Doctor Who than me: is there an LJ Comm for Doctor Who/other fandom crossovers- maybe specifically with a character from said other fandom as a companion?  It seems like there should be (and if there isn't there should be) and I may be, possibly- reluctantly- writing a fic.

I'm sure I'll find somewhere to post when/if I finish regardless; I'm just curious.
potentiality_26: (daniel)
Yep.  I said I'd get on it, and I got on it fast.

So, Orphan Black was great and I'm really excited for more and really sad that I can't have it NOW.  Slight spoilers below, so I'm putting it under a cut just in case.

Major Points of Interest )

Aaaaaaand Doctor Who.

So, the actual plot was pretty iffy.  There was a lot of "We need THIS because of *mumblemumblecough* and it we don't get it there will be *mumblemumblecough* and THE WORLD WILL END."  I mean, there was the master and he could body jump for some reason, but they lost me for most of the rest of it.

But none of that really matters, because I think Paul McGann was a great doctor.  I loved his delivery and his jelly babies (which sounds Freudian now that I type it, but whatever) and his outfit and his hair and his voice and- well, most things.  I'd just watched McGann's episodes of Horatio Hornblower, and I was in the mood for more of him, and as far that goes I'm very happy I saw it.
potentiality_26: (daniel)
The AO3 Major Character Death warning should have qualifiers?

I mean, I try to avoid stories where main characters die, and maybe I should stop because one of my favorite fics ever, The Night of the Setting Sun is a) a death-fic and the kind of the death-fic that makes all the others seem trite and overdone in the face of it's gorgeous simplicity and b) not sad so much as true, exactly everything the canon was telling you would happen if everything one day went very, very wrong.  Also, it probably would have benefited from not having to declare itself.

Okay, I was getting away from my original point there.  My comment is this: shouldn't some fandoms have a canon-typical character death tag the same way there is a canon typical violence tag where you can get away with leaving out the graphic depictions of violence warning because it's Cabin in the Woods or whatever and it's unlikely to be worse than what people already signed up for?

I mean, fics that at certain times in their respective series killed Rory Williams/Daniel Jackson/Nathan Petrelli would really just be business as usual, right?  And he'd keep coming back, wouldn't he?

Anyway, I happen to think a character who gets killed and then brought back again should get a free pass for a while, but if the canon has already gone there...
