Since I've gotten my bingo and one extra finished already, I've started to work on a few more extras.  I think I like doing them more than a regular bingo because multiple prompts make it easier to come up with one idea and stick to it.

I may be biting off more than I can chew (what's new) but I'm thinking about trying to do all the different kinds of extras this year.

So it's fanfic writers appreciation day over on tumblr and I just got a message that I'm kind of boggling over.

Under a cut because y'all don't actually need to read this, I just want to get it off my chest )
potentiality_26: (musketeers)
I actually remembered post a link to my latest fic here like a said I would.  Yay!

It's also my first H/C bingo fill.  I'm planning to try to get a bingo relatively quickly and then maybe do extras later this year instead of starting dozens of fics, posting other stuff for months, and cramming it all into December like I did last year.  We'll see if I actually manage it.

I'm almost finished watching S3 of The Musketeers.  I think I'll do a post on it soon.  In fact, I'll probably do a general shows post pretty soon, since I haven't in a while.
potentiality_26: (agents of shield)
I just saw Captain America Civil War.  I'll do a more detailed post on it on Sunday or something, once I have my thoughts in order, but for now I have to get one thing off my chest:
In the long and glorious history of completely unnecessary and out of left field hetero kisses, the one between Steve and Sharon was a humdinger.  Peggy just died, Steve just learned that Sharon was related to her, their last personal conversation was about Peggy and the things she knew... but sure, they were just boiling with sexual tension that whole time, absolutely.  And it was almost worse because there wasn't even a romantic subplot.  Like I didn't want a romantic subplot, but taking out that kiss would have no noticeable effect on the story, so  Why.  Was.  It.  There???  People in my theatre made the funniest 'hmming' noises.  I think even people who normally dig the whole "attractive white man + attractive white woman = equals love obviously" equation were WTF-ing over this... thing.

Also I'm working on a couple of super fluffy fanfics right now and I have no idea what to call them.  Normally I go for song lyrics when I'm at a loss, but when combing through my music over the last few days I realized that most of my music is of the melancholy and/or overwrought variety.  Can anyone recommend some just really happy love songs?

Very "cotton candy and rainbows"-type quotes about love might be useful too, if anyone knows any.

I really don't want to just make a string of posts ranting about people on AO3, but hey, it's my journal and it makes me feel better so I'm gonna do it anyway.  I am putting it under a cut, though, because I'm oversensitive and talking myself into a corner and seriously no one should read this.

Comment issues. Again. )

I just don't know.

It bothers me so much when people bookmark a fic on AO3 and say negative things about it (or even just say how they liked these parts of it but not those).  I mean I keep telling myself not to look at the bookmarks on my fics because I know I’m gonna see something that upsets me, but that means that I also have to miss out on the nice things other people wrote.

Making a negative bookmark, to me, is almost worse than leaving a negative comment because that way the writer can see those remarks, but they can't do anything about them either.

And if you can’t bring yourself to bookmark something without caveats, without also saying what you didn’t like about it, maybe you don’t really need to bookmark that thing.

Trying to figure out how to reply to a rude comment is the worst.

I keep telling myself to take the high road and find a way to be gracious because I get how they might have thought they were being helpful, but the thing is that I've been getting more and more pissed off about people complaining about fanfiction that isn't perfect and I just want to let it out at someone, and since this person is such a big fan of unsolicited advice, maybe they deserve it.

I still haven't decided what to reply (I'm leaning toward biting my tongue and not saying anything despite my mood since "If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all" is what I think they should adopt), but I have Opinions and I need to share them.

Ah well.  Now I have to decide what to actually say.

I'm sorry if this comes across as kind of a patting myself on the back post, I just can't help sharing.  My eyes have yet to return to their normal size.

I always knew intellectually that larger fandoms/pairings were where it was at, but damn.  My Kingsman fic (and which I dropped the ball on posting here but I'll fix that) is my fifth most read fic and my fourth most kudoed fic (kudo can be a verb, right?) and I posted it this time last night.

On a related subject, I always feel awkward about getting kind of general "I loved this fic it's really good" kind of comments, even though it's obviously great to hear.  Because a) they're really nice to get and I want to thank the person who made said comment, and b) I don't want them to think I just threw out a generic thank you because I did read what they said and I appreciated it, but c) what can I say, really, other than thank you?  "Yes, I rather enjoyed it myself"? It's a weird conundrum.

I've been working on a fic and I realized that I kept switching from past tense to present tense and back again, so I figured I'd just get finished go and back and pick whichever one I used the most later, but man has that turned out to be a lot of work.

What about you guys?  Do you have problems with keeping your tenses straight sometimes?

While I'm here flailing around with my million WIPs, I figured why not do this writers meme [livejournal.com profile] frozen_delight is doing?  Give me a number (or more than one) and I'll answer.

1. Describe yourself how you would describe a character you’re introducing.
2. Is there any specific ritual you go through while/before/after your writing?
3. What is your absolute favorite kind of fic to write?
4. Are there any other fic writers you admire? If so, who and why?
5. How many words can you write if you sit down and concentrate intensely for an hour?
6. First fic/pairing you wrote for? (If no pairing, describe the plot)
7. Inspiration, time, or motivation. Choose two.
8. Why do you choose to write?
9. Do you ever have plans to write anything other than fic?
10. What inspires you the most?
11. Weirdest thing you’ve ever written/thought about writing/etc.?
12. A fic you wish you had written better, and why?
13. Favorite fic from another author?
14. Your favorite side pairings to put in?
15. Your guilty writing pleasure?
16. Do you have structured ideas of how your story is supposed to go, or make it up as you write?
17. Would you describe yourself as a fast writer?
18. How old were you when you started writing?
19. Why did you start writing?
20. 4 sentences from your work that you’re proud of?
potentiality_26: (heroes)
So I currently have at least a little bit written for all the prompts in the bingo I'm going for (I picked the diamond), which is solid progress for a month's work.

I just wish I was better at concetrating on one thing for any length of time, you know?

So I kind of do what people call "hunt and peck" when I type, right?  I don't really hunt, as in I don't stare at the keyboard and look for every letter (I know where they are, I type a lot and I have good muscle memory), I just don't do the fingers on the keyboard position they taught us in school.  I stubbornly refused to pick it up when I was kid and now I type reasonably fast without it so I'm not really willing to relearn.

Anyway, I straight up forgot where the comma was for a minute today, and if there is any letter on a keyboard that I've typed a million times, it's a comma.  I am one of the comma-happiest writer in the world.  But I kept hitting the semi-colon and going "Isn't that where it is?"

Anyway, I cracked myself up.

I wonder

How many people on my flist post fic on AO3 for lots of different fandoms?

I'm wondering if I'm the only one who feels kind of bad for all the people who have user subscriptions for them.  I just imagine those people and think, "Oh honey, you have no idea what's coming next. I have no idea what's coming next."

Kudos meme

potentiality_26: (sherlock)
My top ten fics by kudos on AO3:

Heartlines: James Bond/Sherlock, James Bond/Q, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Hits: 7466.  Kudos: 551
Agent and Hawkeye's Epic Romance: MCU, Clint Barton/Phil Coulson, Tony.  Hits: 4304.  Kudos: 519
An Accidental Engagement: The Hobbit, Bilbo/Thorin, Fíli/Kíli/Tauriel.  Hits: 3748.  Kudos: 413
A Journey Home: The Hobbit/LOTR, Gimli/Legolas, Tauriel.  Hits: 2560.  Kudos: 204
Awake: Sherlock, Greg Lestrade/Mycroft Holmes.  Hits: 1231.  Kudos: 142
Scars: The Musketeers, Athos/d'Artagnan.  Hits: 1655.  Kudos: 142
A Mad Tea Party: Once Upon a Time, Belle/Rumplestiltskin.  Hits: 1143.  Kudos: 98
Moment of Truth: The Musketeers, Aramis/Athos.  Hits: 1076.  Kudos: 91
What Comes Next: The Musketeers, Aramis/Athos/Porthos.  Hits: 1420.  Kudos: 88
Happy Anniversary, MCU, Clint Barton/Phil Coulson.  Hits: 953.  Kudos: 84

I have mixed feelings about this.  On the one hand, the top two fics (my "classy" soulmates fic and my Tony-misunderstands-and-accidentally-matchmakes fic respectively) are probably my favorites, so good on them for getting the most kudos.  They were actually neck in neck for while, which was a little sad because Heartlines usually has roughly twice as many hits as Agent and Hawkeye's Epic Romance.  It's still pretty cool though.  Also I'm proud of A Mad Tea Party.  My little baby's almost to a 100.  I will always have a giant soft spot for that fic.

On the other hand, I have plenty of fics that are lucky to get ten kudos, and it's not like they're that much worse.  They're just for tiny fandoms, and the top kudos getting fics are all for much bigger ones.  I know that this isn't some kind of incredible revelation, I'm just saying.

Thus far

The thing that's bothering me most about tumblr is those AU prompt posts.

There I am, innocently going about my day, and boom- a post with a list of ten to fifty AU prompts/ideas.  And at least one is absolutely going to grab me, and I'm absolutely going to have the basic fic outlined in my mind by the end of the day.

As if I didn't have enough WIPs already.

WIP Meme

From [livejournal.com profile] a_phoenixdragon, When you see this, share 3 random snippets from 3 WIPs

So, I had a stupid little argument with myself over whether or not to do the "I'm really proud of the snippet.  You liked it?  Well, tough luck sucker because that's all I have written of that fic" version of this meme, but I drew the line.

These are all from stories that are at least 80% done and may will surface not too long from now.

An Accidental Engagement- The Hobbit, Bilbo/Thorin )

Something Blue- Once Upon a Time, Belle/Rumplestiltskin, Doctor Who AU sequel )

The Three Curses- The Musketeers, Aramis/Athos/Porthos + Constance/d'Artagnan, Fairytale AU )

Look, they even have titles! (I'm so bad at titles it's not even funny)

Recently [livejournal.com profile] a_phoenixdragon did a fun looking meme where she posted one sentence from all the WIPs she’s mainly working on right now. I’m pretty sure I’d break LJ with all my WIPs, but I still kind of want to play. So, anyone who’s curious about what I’ve got going on right now can ask me for a fandom and/or pairing, and I’ll give you an excerpt from one such piece of writing- probably a snippet I really like rather than just one sentence, because I'm crap at choosing things. I’m mainly working on fics featuring the following (for reference, Character Name/? means I ship and write this character more characters than I care to list, usually both het and slash, so go ahead and try me):

The Hobbit: Bilbo/Thorin
Justified: Ava/Boyd/Raylan and Rachel/Raylan/Tim
Longmire: Henry/? and Henry-centric gen with Martha/Walt or Vic/Walt in the background
Marvel Cinematic Universe: Bucky/Steve, Clint/Phil
The Musketeers: OT3, OT4, Athos/? and some Aramis/Porthos
Once Upon a Time: Belle/Rumplestiltskin, Aurora/Mulan
Sherlock: Mycroft/? and some John/Sherlock
Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Bashir/Garak, some Kira/Odo but mostly as a side-order
Welcome to Night Vale: Carlos/Cecil
The Wild Wild West: This WIP folder is a fucking monster, and one with which I am not on speaking terms at the moment, but go ahead and poke it if you wish
X-Men: Charles/Erik

I have do in fact have fic for a mess of other fandoms lurking here and there and semi-forgotten, so if you want to try me with some other fandoms you can, I might have something somewhere.

Do you ever find yourself on what you suspect is the wrong side of the fine line between "fading to black because it's classy and it's what this story needs" and "just awkwardly stopping"?  I have this fic in my drafts box that's... like... judging me.  On the one hand, I know I'm done with it.  On the other hand, there's this sad sense of shame when someone asks if there's more of something I basically just washed my hands of and it makes me look back and say, "If only I'd tried harder."
potentiality_26: (profit)
I hate coming up with titles.  I mean, sometimes one will be really obvious and just sort of fall into my lap, but so often I'll be sitting there with a perfectly good story, and no earthly idea what to call it.

Summaries aren't always good to me either.  Sometimes they work for me too- others, I'll sit there looking at the summary box in AO3, and it will mock me.

I would have such a fast turn around writing fic if it weren't for this problem.
potentiality_26: (justified)
I need to stay away from kink memes.  'Cos it's all, "Oh, hey, that's a clever prompt.  I won't write it, but I hope someone does."  Three to five days later, who's writing it?  Me.  I have things to be getting on with.  There are some extras on my H/C Bingo card I want to finish up before Christmas.

And I already know that I'm going to get distracted in December, because CHRISTMAS FIC!!!  I'm never that excited about Christmas personally, but writing about fictional characters doing Christmassy things is what I wait for all damn year.

With my original writing off my plate- at least, more off my plate than it has been- I have more time for fic.  I do not have all the time my brain has apparantly decided I have, though.
