So, I watched a Christmas M.A.S.H. episode last night

Or rather, a just-after-Christmas M.A.S.H. episode, where they meet a couple of a British soldiers and learn that there is a Boxing Day tradition wherein the gentry switch places with their servants for the day.  Is this true?  I've never heard of it before, and if it is true I feel like I should have heard of it before.  (I'm aware that I could just google/wikipedia this, and I will if I have to, but I just want to say that if it is true, it's been horribly un-exploited in fic if I've never read about it.  There should be two or three Jeeves and Wooster stories at least).

It is an old tradition that actually died out within the last sixty years. don't know when it started, but there was a tradition just like that...

Cool. Thank you! Now I just how to figure out how silly I should feel for not having known that already...
