Taking Prompts

Over on tumblr I'm open for writing prompts from this list and this one. I'll take them here too if anyone is interested in prompting me.

Question 1

From [personal profile] verdande_mi, thank you!

What is the longest plot idea you've had that you have not started writing? And why not?

This is a tough question simply because I only know when most of my WIPs will be very long once I have bits and pieces of them written and I realize how much is left to go. It might be fun to list those around here at some point, to keep myself accountable progress-wise.

On the subject of ideas I'm just kicking around, though, I have one for a Pride and Prejudice canon divergent AU. I was watching the 1995 version again recently, and I was getting a Vibe off Darcy and Wickham, and I started thinking about something that was still endgame Elizabeth/Darcy but he also had a more intense history with Wickham and there were ripple effects to that. I have a short teaser-style summary and enough plot beats in my head that I know it would be a big project, but that's it so far.

As to why I haven't started it yet, I just need to be in a certain headspace to get the language right, and that's hard when I'm writing modern stuff at the same time, so I'm sort of waiting to run out of steam on (or finish! It's possible to finish) some of the shorter fics I'm working on first.

Ask me questions.

I have signed up for a bingo

I think I'll keep which to myself for now in case I crash and burn, but I have had an idea for a fic already.

And it's the kind of fic idea where you go from prompt to premise to imagining the 5k-at-least of background you'll need to justify the premise all within like one hour, so it might even be a big one.

I Live!

My power was out for four days.  I have played more board games than you can probably imagine.

It may take me a couple more days to get through all my replies because I'm still pretty frazzled, but I wrote a random fic for a random movie I saw, so there's that.  Yay?

Meme Answers: 7, 15, 22

From this list.

From [personal profile] stonepicnicking_okapi:

7: Do you listen to music while you write/read?

Not typically.  Sometimes I make mixes to go with thinking about what I'm writing, but while actually writing or reading I only listen to music if I need to tune out other noise, and then only something instrumental.

I do listen to music while typing something I've handwritten, though.  (And yes, I do handwrite sometimes)

15: What kind of character do you wish you saw portrayed more often?

None that I can really think of.  Some character types are frequently refreshing to me, like supportive spouses or lowkey unpleasant female characters who are nevertheless treated as sympathetic, but I tend to enjoy that feeling of "wow, I've never seen a character quite like this before" a lot more than I enjoy any specific character type.  Also, when character types get recycled, it tends to be like a game of telephone and gets unpleasant really fast.  Consider Sherlock Holmes.  Awesome, unique character, right?  Twelve iterations of the "abrasive genius" archetype later, you start to think you don't like him so much, but it's not true.  He's still great, people just picked the wrong elements to copy and then blow successively more and more out of proportion.

22: Are you more likely to be the person who starts reading a 100k slow burn fic at midnight or the person who starts writing a drabble at 4 a.m.?

Considering I've done both, I'm not sure how to answer this question.  Both are pretty rare, luckily.  Usually I manage to stop and get myself to bed at a reasonable hour.  Usually I manage to still be asleep at 4 a.m.  But if I've had insomnia, I will probably be doing one or the other.

June Fandom Meme Question 15

What is something you do today that you wouldn't be doing if not for fandom?  Examples: Vacation with fellow fen, running a community, etc.

Probably an over-literal answer, but... writing fanfiction?  More generally, posting writing publicly is something only fandom has gotten me to do so far.  I write original fiction, but drafts of novels and short stories (many finished) just hang around on my hard-drives because I hate editing and fear failure.  Someday I will buck up and actually work to get one published, but for now fanfiction is a fun and relatively low-stakes way to not only keep writing but also get my work seen, and I really appreciate it.

Top Fanfic on AO3 Meme

Nabbed from [personal profile] thisbluespirit:

List your top fanfic on AO3 for every year, sorted by kudos.

2013
Today and Sleeping Patterns, both Artemus Gordon/James West Wild Wild West fics, are tied for #1 from this year.

2014
Heartlines, a James Bond/Q James Bond and Sherlock crossover fic.

Not surprise there.  It's for two juggernaut fandoms (though I did write it somewhat after the original Bondlock heyday) and my second most kudo'd fic of all time.

2015

Getting It Right, a Harry Hart/Eggsy Unwin Kingsman fic.

Aaaaand this is my most kudo'd fic of all time.  Kingsman was never quite a juggernaut fandom, but boy was it enthusiastic.  The thing about "Heartlines" is that while it has regularly gotten kudos ever since I posted it, there was never a big rush (and I get that, it's a slightly odd take on the soulmate trope and not to all tastes), while "Getting It Right" had made my top three the day after I posted it, and was #1 by the end of the week.

2016
Love Potion No. 9, another Harry Hart/Eggsy Unwin Kingsman fic.

2017
Until I Saw Your Face, also a Harry Hart/Eggsy Unwin Kingsman fic.

This is a bit of a cheat, since it's a chapter fic I started posting in August 2016 and only finished right at the beginning of January in 2017.  More fairly:

Everything Changes, again a Harry Hart/Eggsy Unwin Kingsman fic.

I'm... confused about this fic.  Seven of my top ten fics are for Kingsman when sorted by kudos, it's basically the fandom where I got love, but by the summer of 2017 things were petering out somewhat.  The sequel was coming in the fall and a lot of people were thinking it might reinvigorate their interest (spoiler alert: for a lot of people it. did. not), but otherwise things were getting quiet.  It surprises the heck out of me that this fic overtook so many older fics (it's #7 among my fics overall).  It got a much bigger response than I expected, both because the fandom wasn't as big as it had been, and because- while I was certainly pleased with it- I never thought it was that much better than everything else I was working on at the time.  Guess it struck a chord with everyone.

Ah, well.  2017: the last year I wrote Kingsman fic (see above sequel remarks).  Goodnight, sweet prince.

2018

Eighth Time's the Charm, a Lou Miller/Debbie Ocean Ocean's 8 fic.

Not much to say about this one, except that I was proud of myself for turning it out so quickly after seeing the movie.

2019
... Electing not to do 2019.  I'd rather wait and see where I am at the end of the year.

There's a very interesting question on this writing meme: You've posted a fic anonymously. How would someone be able to guess that you'd written it?

I had a difficult time answering it, and honestly I'd be more curious how other people who've read my work think I would give myself away.  Anyone else feel the same?

Fandom Snowflake Challenge: Days 12-13

Day 12

In your own space, create your own challenge.

Day 13

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

Well, in the writing meme post I did at the end of December, I set myself the goal of posting at least 50 fics this year.  And since I'm in total "But I don't want to edit this" mode with most of the stuff I've been working on, I thought by way of combining these two challenges I would open myself up for some short fic prompts.

I always enjoyed prompt memes on tumblr (like this one or this one) but stopped doing them for a while.  I'd like to try again, so if anyone wants to send me a ship and a prompt from those lists, or one of your own devising, I'll try to write something less than 1k to order.

My main fandoms right now are Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, Sherlock Holmes, Raffles and Callan, but check out the interests part of my profile for a more complete list.  And you'd be safe with the top ships in any of those fandoms, but I'm also a multishipper willing to give most things a try.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge: Day 11

Day 11

In your own space, talk about your creative process(es) — anything from the initial inspiration to how you feel after something’s done. Do you struggle with motivation or is it a smooth process? Do you have any tricks up your sleeve to pull out when a fanwork isn’t cooperating? What is your level of planning to pantsing/winging it?

I get inspired all the time, and for many different stories, so in the interest of not completely drowning in WIPs I usually start by just writing the basic idea down in a list for later.  I try to only let myself start on a few, but I don't have great self-control, so that doesn't always happen.  The problem, of course, is that stories tend to come to me in scenes and snippets of dialogue.  I'll forget those snippets by the time I finally get around to writing them if I'm not careful.

In terms of how smoothly the actual work goes, it really depends on the fic.  I really have no idea what makes one story flow out like a dream and what makes another stall.

I only really outline if it's a 5 + 1 style fic, or something like that where the structure of the story is the point of the story.  Otherwise I just see where it goes.  I also finish a work faster and more neatly when I write it linearly, but that doesn't always happen for me.  Sometimes I have the middle in my mind really clearly and nothing else, so that ends up being what I write.

I also often take a long time to edit something.  It's my least favorite part of the process, and I'll occasionally end up with some perfectly innocent 2k fic just sitting in my drafts folder for weeks because I think something's wrong with it but I haven't decided what it is.

Writing Meme

As promised, here's my writing meme.  It borrows from a couple I've seen floating around on tumblr and another from [personal profile] elrhiarhodan, with some questions of my own thrown in as well.

How many fics did you write this year?  How many words?

46 fics and 98,789 words.

Is that more or less than you imagined you would?

It's one fic more than I wrote last year, and definitely a lot, so objectively speaking it's more than I expected.  That said, I did notice a few weeks ago that I was nearly to fifty, and I hoped I would get there by the end of the year.  Since then I've made peace with the fact that my distractable ass is probably not going to finish anything else in the next day and a half.  January is hereby dubbed "Christmas residue month" over here.

More questions and answers this way )

We'll see what next year brings!

Meme Question

Does anyone know a good end of the year fic/writing meme?  You know, what new fandoms did you write, what was your most popular fic, what fic did you wish had got more attention, those kind of questions?

Failing that, would anyone be interested if I wrote one of my own?

WIP Meme

Here's another meme I was tagged for over on tumblr.

The Rules: Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Pick out the title that most intrigues you or interests you and I’ll post a little snippet of it or tell you something about it!!

Apologies that these entries seem like they're in code; it's my habit to use initials for a lot of different things.  Feel free to ask questions about as many as you like, if you like.  I may answer in separate posts, depending on how many questions I get and how interesting I think the answers are.

Teaser:

Exorcist Mind Whammy fic
SH ACD Crazymaking Victorian crossover
KALOTS Soulmate AU
MCU B + V ficlet
SH HH Christmas Pudding Ds

All of them (there are 101 y'all, and I didn't even touch the dark "let's be honest you aren't going back to this anytime soon" secondary folder):

Top and Bottom 5 Fics

I was tagged over on tumblr to post a list of my top and bottom five fics by kudos.  I thought I would post it here as well.

Top Five

1. Getting It Right
(Kingsman, Harry/Eggsy) Five times Eggsy gets Harry to kiss him for the wrong reasons (and one time he gets it right). 3038 kudos.
2. Heartlines (James Bond and Sherlock, Bond/Q, Sherlock/John) Q and Bond are soulmates.  Between Q's family and Bond's... everything, it isn't as simple as it sounds. 2469 kudos.
3. No Charm Equal (Kingsman, Harry/Eggsy) Harry is a cupid.  His latest assignment is proving to be... complicated. 1576 kudos.
4. Until I Saw Your Face (Kingsman, Harry/Eggsy) Harry just needs somewhere to lay low and patch himself up.  He isn't expecting to meet someone who fascinates him, or to run into that someone again and again. 1459 kudos.
5. An Accidental Engagement (The Hobbit, Bilbo/Thorin, Fíli/Kíli/Tauriel) Bilbo's fake-it-'til-you-make-it interpretation of dwarven culture is working quite well for him, thank you very much- all the way up until it really, really isn't. 1396 kudos.

Bottom Five

1. Heads or Tails (Thorne, Sarah gen) Sarah in the aftermath. 3 kudos.
2. Hollow (Sherlock, Sally/Stella) A strange case. 2 kudos.
3. Gifts (Identity, Team gen) It's John's birthday. 2 kudos.
4. Carols and Pomegranate Seeds (Identity, John/Martha) John reflects, and pays Martha a visit. 2 kudos.
5. Permutations (New Tricks, Jane/Stephen, Stephen/Robert, Robert/Sarah)  In Stephen Fisher's hospital room after 'Part of a Whole.'  2 kudos.

And that, my friends, is an impressive spread between most to least kudos.  For the curious, my average is about 236 kudos per fic.
