Title: The Garden Where All Beauties Be
Fandom: The Witcher
Pairing/Characters: Geralt of Rivia/Jaskier
Summary: Jaskier gets a noseful of pollen in a mage's tower.
Rating: NC-17
Length: Medium (11,193 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Title from Sir Phillip Sidney's Sonnet 82. I went with more traditional fantasy creatures for the references in this story because that's what's familiar to me — apologies if any of it actually contradicts Witcher canon. I have seen S3 this time, but the vibes are mainly S1 again.
Excerpt:
Jaskier wanted to tell Geralt he felt just fine. That his nose had been irritated at first but that seemed to be over with now and he was — it was fine. Not worth fussing over. All right, maybe worth fussing a little. Maybe worth holding on to him, just for a moment longer. Maybe —

The unfortunate truth, Jaskier slowly realized, was that he did not, in fact, feel fine. It started with a heat in the pit of his stomach and a burning along his skin. And it didn’t get better.

Title: Change of Season
Fandom: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Pairing/Characters: Julian Bashir/Elim Garak
Summary: A homecoming.
Rating: PG
Length: Very Short (408 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Old ficlet I found that I never posted. Inspired by this prompt but kind of going in its own direction. Fills my 100fandoms table prompt #6 (home).
Excerpt:
In the capital, winter was on the way.  Still a bit warm by the standards Julian had grown up with, it had been getting truly cold to Cardassians for a while now.  Evolutionarily speaking, as a species they hadn’t hibernated for millennia, but they did get drowsy, even lazy, this time of year.  It spoke to how used to the climate he had become that when Julian landed he immediately felt a chill and a profound desire to remain indoors until the spring thaw.

Title: True North
Fandom: Escape Room
Pairing/Characters: Zoey Davis/Amanda Harper
Summary: Amanda makes it. Everything changes and nothing does.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Short (1216 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Happy Halloween, I guess?  This is kind of a horror movie. Fills my 100fandoms table prompt #22 (fire). Possibly also my hc_bingo "survivor's guilt" square, but that might be too tenuous.
Excerpt:

She looked for Amanda last, scrubbing tears out of her eyes as she read the story of a veteran who fell climbing alone-
yeah, right- and then almost threw her laptop against the wall when the article went on to talk about hikers in the right place at the right time, about miraculous rescues and brilliant doctors, about the hospital where Amanda was being treated.

Treated.

Title: Menace
Fandom: Callan
Pairing/Characters: David Callan/Toby Meres
Summary: Sometimes there's only one bed. This is one of those times.
Rating: PG
Length: Short (1,186 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: I feel like this must come before Playing with Fire chronologically, but I've made it a series while I figure it out. I have ideas for more in this 'verse.  Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt:

Callan stopped for a second too long in the doorway. Meres, having picked up their bags with exaggerated deference to Callan’s age and experience, nearly collided with his back. Evidently the section had elected not to spring for a double room on this occasion.

Title: Rushing Headlong
Fandom: Good Omens
Pairing/Characters: Aziraphale/Crowley
Summary: Things are changing a little too fast for Aziraphale's taste.
Rating: PG
Length: Short (1543 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: I thought about tagging this for the book too, but I haven't read it in fifteen years and need to be honest about what this is. The TV adaptation was great fun and I'm getting on that train. Fills my 100fandoms table prompt #12 (new) and my hc_bingo "hugs" square. Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt:

The apocalypse-that-wasn't was still fresh in Aziraphale's mind, and he spent the drive mainly luxuriating in the ‘still here’ of it all. That sweet shop down the way he had always liked? Still here. The stationary shop he often patronized? Still here. More importantly, his own shop, just waiting for him to return of an evening? Still here. And- more importantly still- Crowley in the car next to him, obeying the rules of the road for once? Still here. Everything could go back to normal.

But then, even through that contented haze, a niggling voice in the back of his mind turned strident and began to sound awfully like Gabriel. It wanted to know just how likely to go back to normal everything really was.

Nabbed from [personal profile] thisbluespirit:

List your top fanfic on AO3 for every year, sorted by kudos.

2013
Today and Sleeping Patterns, both Artemus Gordon/James West Wild Wild West fics, are tied for #1 from this year.

2014
Heartlines, a James Bond/Q James Bond and Sherlock crossover fic.

Not surprise there.  It's for two juggernaut fandoms (though I did write it somewhat after the original Bondlock heyday) and my second most kudo'd fic of all time.

2015

Getting It Right, a Harry Hart/Eggsy Unwin Kingsman fic.

Aaaaand this is my most kudo'd fic of all time.  Kingsman was never quite a juggernaut fandom, but boy was it enthusiastic.  The thing about "Heartlines" is that while it has regularly gotten kudos ever since I posted it, there was never a big rush (and I get that, it's a slightly odd take on the soulmate trope and not to all tastes), while "Getting It Right" had made my top three the day after I posted it, and was #1 by the end of the week.

2016
Love Potion No. 9, another Harry Hart/Eggsy Unwin Kingsman fic.

2017
Until I Saw Your Face, also a Harry Hart/Eggsy Unwin Kingsman fic.

This is a bit of a cheat, since it's a chapter fic I started posting in August 2016 and only finished right at the beginning of January in 2017.  More fairly:

Everything Changes, again a Harry Hart/Eggsy Unwin Kingsman fic.

I'm... confused about this fic.  Seven of my top ten fics are for Kingsman when sorted by kudos, it's basically the fandom where I got love, but by the summer of 2017 things were petering out somewhat.  The sequel was coming in the fall and a lot of people were thinking it might reinvigorate their interest (spoiler alert: for a lot of people it. did. not), but otherwise things were getting quiet.  It surprises the heck out of me that this fic overtook so many older fics (it's #7 among my fics overall).  It got a much bigger response than I expected, both because the fandom wasn't as big as it had been, and because- while I was certainly pleased with it- I never thought it was that much better than everything else I was working on at the time.  Guess it struck a chord with everyone.

Ah, well.  2017: the last year I wrote Kingsman fic (see above sequel remarks).  Goodnight, sweet prince.

2018

Eighth Time's the Charm, a Lou Miller/Debbie Ocean Ocean's 8 fic.

Not much to say about this one, except that I was proud of myself for turning it out so quickly after seeing the movie.

2019
... Electing not to do 2019.  I'd rather wait and see where I am at the end of the year.

Title: A Step Too Far
Fandom: Callan
Pairing/Characters: David Callan/Toby Meres, Hunter
Summary: After Richmond, Callan does a spot of eavesdropping and learns something he never knew.
Rating: NC-17
Length: Medium (8,434 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Minor violence.  References "The Richmond File" episodes and "You Should Have Got Here Sooner" pretty heavily. I went back and forth on whether to put some kind of "not that fluffy but fluffy for the source material" tag on this- I went back and forth on how fluffy it in fact is- so YMMV. Obviously the "post-canon" tag is used in a "Wet Job? I don't know her" capacity. Fills my 100fandoms table prompt #30 (truth) and possibly also my hc_bingo "forced to participate in illegal / hurtful activity" square.
Excerpt:
Dead mother, absent father, constant stream of nannies and tutors until he could be safely shipped off to boarding school... Callan had skimmed that part of Meres' file while he was Hunter because it all seemed a bit poor little rich boy. It didn’t feel like that now.

Title: The Second Hand Unwinds
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe (Thor, Avengers)
Pairing/Characters: Loki/Thor
Summary: This isn't a quest. Thor isn't sure what it is, though.
Rating: NC-17
Length: Short (4077 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Endgame spoilers, canon character death, bittersweet/ambiguous ending.  Fills my 100fandoms table prompt #26 (balm). Title from "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper. Not a fix-it because I'm not sure how to fix a lot of this, but I was definitely working through some stuff. Set before Thor's final scene with the Guardians of the Galaxy characters, I guess, but the continuity's a bit wonky. Enjoy?
Excerpt:
There was a Loki out there who had escaped with the Tesseract, years ago. Thor did not know if he made these trips to find the strength to go looking for him, or the strength not to.

So apparently you can create your own Tag Set on AO3 for prompting purposes the same way some gift exchanges do.  It's a smart idea, though I've got too many prompts and WIPs to get through to invite more.

But anyway, I was looking at a few of the existing sets, mostly from exchanges, and boy are there things I had no idea were Things. And I absolutely wish people joy of them, but... it's been educating.  Also I found a smut exchange with like... one or two tags that struck me entirely as un-smut-related?  Like... eels?  And I have no doubt that there's an explanation, but do I want to know it?

So I've noticed that when someone I've subscribed to on AO3 posts multiple fics in close succession, I only get one email.  Does anybody know how close together the fics have to be published for that to happen?

Title: Playing with Fire
Fandom: Callan
Pairing/Characters: David Callan/Toby Meres
Summary: The night after a long day.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Short (1215 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Somewhat inspired by the Lewis episode "Music to Die For", which I watched recently. Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt:
“You must be exhausted,” he said, getting up. Meres usually was when he made a rare self-deprecating class joke. Callan didn’t want to contemplate what, beyond tiredness, it might signify. The apocalypse. Brain damage.

Fandom: The Sisters Brothers
Pairing/Characters: John Morris/Hermann Kermit Warm
Summary: Maybe there is a better world, somewhere.
Rating: PG
Length: Very short (684 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Includes canon character death.  Fills my [community profile] 100fandoms table prompt #20 (discover).  Ficlet for a movie I just saw to remind me that I can, in fact, finish a thing.
Excerpt:
He sat on a rock that overlooked the valley and said to himself, or maybe to the Hermann he couldn’t see- he wasn’t sure when thoughts he had always kept between himself and his notebook became thoughts for Hermann, but it was long before this, whatever this was, happened- “I do not believe I wanted to be your friend.”

Title: Idle Hands
Fandom: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
Pairing/Characters: John Childermass/John Segundus, Mr. Honeyfoot, Vinculus
Summary: Childermass' plan to keep himself occupied at Starecross may not be quite perfect.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Short (2,392 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Fills my[community profile] 100fandoms table prompt #18 (fix).
Excerpt:
Now that Norrell was gone, and missed largely in the little moments when Childermass heard this or that piece of news and thought how he would tell it to Norrell, and how he would react- and then he remembered that Norrell was not there to tell, and he liked to be busy more than ever.

Mostly, he was- for there was a great deal to do. There were old politicians and new magicians to deal with; there was Vinculus to manage; there was a different kind of magic and a different kind of life for his people to carve out, and Childermass was busily carving it. There was little time to regret words spoken in haste, or to miss the society of men he still regarded very highly, however things had fallen out- or to be lonesome in general. But sometimes... sometimes he stopped, and he stopped most often at Starecross. And it was strange, but in that place- where he had the least reason to be lonely- he was most intensely so.

Title: Midnight Clarity
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (Howard)
Pairing/Characters: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Summary: After John Norton's second arrest, things aren't yet back to normal.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Short (1,108 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: It's Christmas, so I wrote a "The Case of the Christmas Pudding" tag. It may not even be the last because this episode is A Lot. Title is a bit of a play on "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear."
Excerpt:
Watson didn’t sound as if he was going to stop talking any time soon. I stopped listening around when he told me that sometimes he thought I needed a nurse. I stood by what I had done, but I wouldn’t deny that I was rattled now- yes, by the neat bullet holes in that dummy’s forehead, but perhaps a little more by the fear in his voice. If I had to choose between his safety and his feelings, his safety would always win- but it was a bitter calculation, all the same. Sometimes I really was afraid that I would drive him away- with my tricks, my experiments, my disguises, my violin, my recklessness. Other times, I was afraid that I wouldn’t.

Title: Season of Giving
Fandom: Kingsman
Pairing/Characters: Gazelle/Roxy Morton
Summary: An early Christmas present.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Very Short (547 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt:
Roxy squirmed into a sitting position and opened the parcel, sliding her fingernail neatly underneath the bit of tape holding it shut. Gazelle, she suspected, would be a tearer in situations like this. It was very much how she was the rest of the time. Roxy had yet to convince her that there was sometimes more of a challenge in keeping things whole.

I was tagged over on tumblr to post a list of my top and bottom five fics by kudos.  I thought I would post it here as well.

Top Five

1. Getting It Right
(Kingsman, Harry/Eggsy) Five times Eggsy gets Harry to kiss him for the wrong reasons (and one time he gets it right). 3038 kudos.
2. Heartlines (James Bond and Sherlock, Bond/Q, Sherlock/John) Q and Bond are soulmates.  Between Q's family and Bond's... everything, it isn't as simple as it sounds. 2469 kudos.
3. No Charm Equal (Kingsman, Harry/Eggsy) Harry is a cupid.  His latest assignment is proving to be... complicated. 1576 kudos.
4. Until I Saw Your Face (Kingsman, Harry/Eggsy) Harry just needs somewhere to lay low and patch himself up.  He isn't expecting to meet someone who fascinates him, or to run into that someone again and again. 1459 kudos.
5. An Accidental Engagement (The Hobbit, Bilbo/Thorin, Fíli/Kíli/Tauriel) Bilbo's fake-it-'til-you-make-it interpretation of dwarven culture is working quite well for him, thank you very much- all the way up until it really, really isn't. 1396 kudos.

Bottom Five

1. Heads or Tails (Thorne, Sarah gen) Sarah in the aftermath. 3 kudos.
2. Hollow (Sherlock, Sally/Stella) A strange case. 2 kudos.
3. Gifts (Identity, Team gen) It's John's birthday. 2 kudos.
4. Carols and Pomegranate Seeds (Identity, John/Martha) John reflects, and pays Martha a visit. 2 kudos.
5. Permutations (New Tricks, Jane/Stephen, Stephen/Robert, Robert/Sarah)  In Stephen Fisher's hospital room after 'Part of a Whole.'  2 kudos.

And that, my friends, is an impressive spread between most to least kudos.  For the curious, my average is about 236 kudos per fic.

Title: A Most Remarkable Case
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (ACD and Granada)
Pairing/Characters: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Stanley Hopkins
Summary: In the aftermath of the Abbey Grange case, Holmes and Watson make an agreement- but all is not as it seems.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Medium (13,097 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: This was inspired by a line of dialogue from the Granada episode and it spiraled really out of control. It's meant to fit into the show's continuity, but it also borrows elements from the original story. In other words, Granada tried to fix a plot hole, and I decided to unfix it again.
Excerpt: Perhaps what Crocker said should have made a greater impression on me at the time- as it must have on Holmes- for it was quite a neat encapsulation of my own existence. Perhaps it did not because for all I loved him, for all I wanted things which could never be mine, I often forgot to be discontented for days, even weeks, at a time. Crumbs from Sherlock Holmes were, I felt, a feast from anyone else. But in the moment I was unspeakably grateful to our friend the captain for saying and meaning what I could not.

Fic: Hollow

Title: Hollow
Fandom: Sherlock
Pairing/Characters: Sally Donovan/Stella Hopkins
Summary: A strange case.
Rating: PG
Length: Very Short (465 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: I've been working on a fic based ACD/Granada’s Abbey Grange, and it made me think about a more modern interpretation of that case, and how it might have been handled by Sherlock’s version of Hopkins. This is the result. I don’t actually remember what case she really brought Sherlock in the show, so sorry if this ignores anything in canon.
Excerpt:
She had been watching Stella Hopkins for a while- from where she sat at the other end of the bar, and also in general. She knew Hopkins was trying to make a name for herself and figured that Sherlock Holmes could be a good way to do that; either she would come out the other side of it or she wouldn’t. Sally hoped it would be the former, obviously- but she saw hints of the latter in the speed at which Hopkins had been drinking all night.

Title: East of the Sun and West of the Moon
Fandom: Kingsman
Pairing/Characters: Eggsy Unwin/Harry Hart + Ensemble
Summary: Of fairy tales and happy endings.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Medium (5053 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: I wanted to give this fic a more generic fairy tale title, but this was the one it wanted. Also, I have no idea how old Eggsy's sister is supposed to be at the end of the movie, so I may be taking serious liberties with her maturity level in this fic. Call it an AU?  Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt: Eggsy thought that if in the story the good fairy told the princess-who-wasn't-always-a-princess that she could have the fine house and the steady income from the awesome job, but she couldn’t have him because he got himself shot in fucking Kentucky, no one would like it very much.

Eggsy could walk the world with no shoes on a thousand times over and it wouldn’t bring Harry back, because fairy tales weren’t real.

Title: On Lateness
Fandom: Kingsman
Pairing/Characters: Gazelle/Roxy Morton, Richmond Valentine
Summary: An unexpected encounter on campus.
Rating: PG
Length: Short (1,760 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: An unusual pair for me but I like to branch out from time to time. This is based on an American (and also outdated) university experience and I'm afraid I don't know a whole lot about TAs (only one of my profs ever had one), so apologies in advance for any mistakes there.  Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt: Gazelle blinked at her. “You remember me?” She sounded surprised, in that I-try-very-hard-not-to-take-anything-too-seriously way Roxy remembered her having.

Of course she remembered. Gazelle always sat at the back of the classroom, the seat beside her always empty, and she would prop her legs up on it and survey the room through the curtain of her hair in a listless fashion that did little to disguise how smart she was and how much she really did care about getting an education. Her legs were bright and knife sharp, like her smile and her eyes and her tongue- when Roxy coaxed her into speaking during class, that was. Gazelle was very hard to forget indeed.
