friday: most self-indulgent fic you have ever posted?

I tend to think of fanfiction as inherently self-indulgent. Some really tropey fics might be more so than others, but I always figure that if I'm going to write fic I'm going to write whatever makes me happy and let it be whatever it is. That said, I tend to gravitate to small fandoms, and sometimes I'll get bothered about how little attention the fics for them get, and decide I should try writing for a bigger fandom just for the attention. I feel that way about my Avengers fic Agent and Hawkeye's Epic Romance. I'm not ashamed of it or anything, and I think it's a pretty good fic, but I do sometimes feel like I wrote it for the wrong reasons. And it wasn't all that popular, lol.

minutes: how long does it normally take you to complete a fic?

There's really no straightforward answer to this; I've poked a fic that's 1k for half a year and finished a 29k fic in a month. But broadly speaking it takes me a while. I write pretty fast when I'm inspired, but I haaaaate editing and will leave a draft to sit for a really long time unless I have a deadline to meet.

1. Yes, I've ruminated a lot on the 'Love of the Game' vs. 'Popularity Contest' motivations for ficcing. I find myself swinging back and forth. I have written a fic just because I suspected it would be popular (and it worked). And I've written things I thought were clever but didn't hit the right tags to get an audience. Slowly, I've come to see my AO3 account as simply an archive, like a folder on my computer, and reminding myself of that seems to relieve some of the angst of not getting kudos or comments.

Holy cow, that is a range! I don't know that I could do either of those things (the half a year or the month). Huh. That's interesting. I always regret signing up for challenges with deadlines, always! Except Hallowe'en :)

It's smart to look at it that way. I'd say 90% of the time I don't worry too much about kudos/comments either. It's that other 10% that gets me in trouble...

For deadlines I normally stick to bingos and promptathons, where there's a timeframe but if you don't make it it's not a big deal. Gift exchanges and things like that I definitely regret.

tuesday: name a fic you have posted which you think is overrated??

I already talked a bit about it in my last fanfic meme, but this is probably my Kingsman fic Everything Changes. I don't think it's a bad fic by any means, but it ended up being a lot more popular than a lot of fics I posted much earlier and- often- liked more, and I just think about it and sort of go "But why???"

wednesday: name a fic which you have posted which you think is underrated?

I'll go with my Identity fic A Foreign Country, partly because I was just talking about how much I feel like I'm shouting into the void with that fandom. I'm really pleased with that fic and I put a lot of feels into it, and yet it languishes in obscurity.

Fix-it fic is always going to be a best seller in fandom land -- I'm thoroughly convinced it's one of the main reasons why fan fic exists in the first place, all those times we all walk out of movies thinking "if only X had lived what would have happened?"

As to Identity, I've never seen the canon and I totally get what you're saying as I have written so many stories where there's just not an audience for it, like Battle Creek.

It's tough when you get passionate about a series and there's just not much going on fandom-wise.

I know that territory all too well.

My "big" fandoms were big years ago and are now functionally tiny -- Man from UNCLE and The Professionals -- and otherwise the biggest fandoms I've ever been in are Life on Mars and Person of Interest which are still pretty small in the grand scheme of things. Otherwise I've been drawn to fandoms like Battle Creek and The Alienist which are just tiny.

Probably this one. It's simple but I cried a bit when I got it, ngl, and I still think about it every now and then even though its been years.

I actually write a lot of dark stuff and spitefic that I put away in a folder never to see the light of day lol, so written and posted are two different things. I also think about a lot of angsty plotlines that never even get written down. "Character who is in unrequited love and/or post break-up finds a way to delete their emotions" is like my little black dress of make-myself-sad daydreams, idk why.

In terms of fics I've posted, I actually orphaned my darkest fic. It's a Wild Wild West fic called Future Tense and you can still find it on AO3 if you try. I would not recommend the reading of it, though- I wrote it a long time ago and barely edited it. In terms of fic still associated with my username, my Thorki fic The Second Hand Unwinds is pretty angsty, largely because Endgame made me sad and I decided to make myself sadder. I'd say it was only mildly angsty, though.

!!!! You have a LBD of angsty daydreams too! <3 What's the appeal of the emotion-wipe? Does the target of said love find out, only too late to stop it?

My LBD is a lot darker... usually involving Character A getting raped/tortured to protect Character B for whom he feels unrequited love. Cue deathbed love confession and eternal angst when B finds out. (Or miraculous healing cock if I don't wanna take the angst that far, lol. There's a reason these LBDs never get written.)

Oh, of course the target finds out! I think what appeals to me the chance to give Character B the total "too little too late" experience, while Character A gets to be just... over it. Like you I'm into the "eternal angst" for the other party. But even in angsty daydreams I tend not to break things I can't fix lol.
