It's been interesting for me to think about this, because I've realized that when I was young I didn't really personally identify with fictional characters. There were certainly characters that I loved and cared about and pretended to be on occaision, but I don't recall really looking at them and thinking "wow, that character reminds me of me."
So I think the first time it happened was when I was eleven or twelve, and this friend I'd recently made who was really into the Discworld series started calling me Granny after Granny Weatherwax. Eventually I started reading the books to figure out what she was talking about, and while I think Granny is definitely a lot cooler than me, it wasn't a bad comparison either (I was such a grouchy old lady as a kid, I'm telling you) and it definitely expanded my thinking.
