In your own space, create a fanwork.

Last time I did the Snowflake Challenge, I put out a call for prompts for this one. I think I even answered at least one, but this fic was left almost-finished and never posted.  So I've finished it now.

One thing I've been missing about Tumblr was getting writing prompts and just posting the story with the ask, then waiting a week before putting it up on AO3. It would give my followers a kind of preview, and also buy me a week before I had to come up with tags, a summary, a title, etc. I'm trying that here.

Prompt from [personal profile] stonepicnicking_okapi:

Title: True North
Fandom: Escape Room
Pairing/Characters: Zoey Davis/Amanda Harper
Summary: Amanda makes it. Everything changes and nothing does.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Short (1216 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Happy Halloween, I guess?  This is kind of a horror movie. Fills my 100fandoms table prompt #22 (fire). Possibly also my hc_bingo "survivor's guilt" square, but that might be too tenuous.
Excerpt:

She looked for Amanda last, scrubbing tears out of her eyes as she read the story of a veteran who fell climbing alone-
yeah, right- and then almost threw her laptop against the wall when the article went on to talk about hikers in the right place at the right time, about miraculous rescues and brilliant doctors, about the hospital where Amanda was being treated.

Treated.

Title: Rushing Headlong
Fandom: Good Omens
Pairing/Characters: Aziraphale/Crowley
Summary: Things are changing a little too fast for Aziraphale's taste.
Rating: PG
Length: Short (1543 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: I thought about tagging this for the book too, but I haven't read it in fifteen years and need to be honest about what this is. The TV adaptation was great fun and I'm getting on that train. Fills my 100fandoms table prompt #12 (new) and my hc_bingo "hugs" square. Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt:

The apocalypse-that-wasn't was still fresh in Aziraphale's mind, and he spent the drive mainly luxuriating in the ‘still here’ of it all. That sweet shop down the way he had always liked? Still here. The stationary shop he often patronized? Still here. More importantly, his own shop, just waiting for him to return of an evening? Still here. And- more importantly still- Crowley in the car next to him, obeying the rules of the road for once? Still here. Everything could go back to normal.

But then, even through that contented haze, a niggling voice in the back of his mind turned strident and began to sound awfully like Gabriel. It wanted to know just how likely to go back to normal everything really was.

Title: Idle Hands
Fandom: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
Pairing/Characters: John Childermass/John Segundus, Mr. Honeyfoot, Vinculus
Summary: Childermass' plan to keep himself occupied at Starecross may not be quite perfect.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Short (2,392 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Fills my[community profile] 100fandoms table prompt #18 (fix).
Excerpt:
Now that Norrell was gone, and missed largely in the little moments when Childermass heard this or that piece of news and thought how he would tell it to Norrell, and how he would react- and then he remembered that Norrell was not there to tell, and he liked to be busy more than ever.

Mostly, he was- for there was a great deal to do. There were old politicians and new magicians to deal with; there was Vinculus to manage; there was a different kind of magic and a different kind of life for his people to carve out, and Childermass was busily carving it. There was little time to regret words spoken in haste, or to miss the society of men he still regarded very highly, however things had fallen out- or to be lonesome in general. But sometimes... sometimes he stopped, and he stopped most often at Starecross. And it was strange, but in that place- where he had the least reason to be lonely- he was most intensely so.

Title: Midnight Clarity
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (Howard)
Pairing/Characters: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Summary: After John Norton's second arrest, things aren't yet back to normal.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Short (1,108 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: It's Christmas, so I wrote a "The Case of the Christmas Pudding" tag. It may not even be the last because this episode is A Lot. Title is a bit of a play on "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear."
Excerpt:
Watson didn’t sound as if he was going to stop talking any time soon. I stopped listening around when he told me that sometimes he thought I needed a nurse. I stood by what I had done, but I wouldn’t deny that I was rattled now- yes, by the neat bullet holes in that dummy’s forehead, but perhaps a little more by the fear in his voice. If I had to choose between his safety and his feelings, his safety would always win- but it was a bitter calculation, all the same. Sometimes I really was afraid that I would drive him away- with my tricks, my experiments, my disguises, my violin, my recklessness. Other times, I was afraid that I wouldn’t.

Title: A Most Remarkable Case
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (ACD and Granada)
Pairing/Characters: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Stanley Hopkins
Summary: In the aftermath of the Abbey Grange case, Holmes and Watson make an agreement- but all is not as it seems.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Medium (13,097 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: This was inspired by a line of dialogue from the Granada episode and it spiraled really out of control. It's meant to fit into the show's continuity, but it also borrows elements from the original story. In other words, Granada tried to fix a plot hole, and I decided to unfix it again.
Excerpt: Perhaps what Crocker said should have made a greater impression on me at the time- as it must have on Holmes- for it was quite a neat encapsulation of my own existence. Perhaps it did not because for all I loved him, for all I wanted things which could never be mine, I often forgot to be discontented for days, even weeks, at a time. Crumbs from Sherlock Holmes were, I felt, a feast from anyone else. But in the moment I was unspeakably grateful to our friend the captain for saying and meaning what I could not.

Title: East of the Sun and West of the Moon
Fandom: Kingsman
Pairing/Characters: Eggsy Unwin/Harry Hart + Ensemble
Summary: Of fairy tales and happy endings.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Medium (5053 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: I wanted to give this fic a more generic fairy tale title, but this was the one it wanted. Also, I have no idea how old Eggsy's sister is supposed to be at the end of the movie, so I may be taking serious liberties with her maturity level in this fic. Call it an AU?  Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt: Eggsy thought that if in the story the good fairy told the princess-who-wasn't-always-a-princess that she could have the fine house and the steady income from the awesome job, but she couldn’t have him because he got himself shot in fucking Kentucky, no one would like it very much.

Eggsy could walk the world with no shoes on a thousand times over and it wouldn’t bring Harry back, because fairy tales weren’t real.

Title: Out of the Cold
Fandom: Kingsman
Pairing/Characters: Eggsy Unwin/Harry Hart, Merlin
Summary: A mission gone wrong.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Short (2,744 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Yep, I wrote trudging through snow angst in the middle of summer. The title is from "Keep Me Warm" by The Little Estate feat. Erin Bowman, which I found by googling word combinations- but it's actually a very nice song to listen to while looking at gingerbread recipes and pining for winter like I've been doing. This fills my H/C bingo "near death experiences" square.  Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt: “I know you don’t want to start talking like this,” Harry said. “But we have to think practically. I’m slowing you down.” The snow was thick and Eggsy would have been having trouble walking through it even without Harry draped over his shoulders. And at his age- and Harry so hated thoughts that began with ‘at his age’, but again practicality had to win out- Harry just couldn’t handle the cold or the exertion as well as he once did, and that was without the twisted ankle and cracked ribs.

Title: Interruptions
Fandom: Kingsman
Pairing/Characters: Eggsy Unwin/Harry Hart, Original Characters
Summary: Eggsy really hates Harry’s candidate for Tristan. He feels it’s justified.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Short (3,042 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: I got this idea quite a while ago, when I saw an imagine-your-OTP style prompt where character A gets stood up and character B pretends to have been their date (I haven’t been able to track down the actual post since then), and immediately after that also saw some speculation about how Eggsy would probably feel about Harry’s next candidate, but I only recently actually got it off the ground.  Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt: Just when Eggsy let himself think that he might get through this without being asked any awkward questions, Harry said- very casually- “Am I right in supposing that your being here instead of George means that you chose to come here directly instead of simply telling him that he’d forgotten he had plans with me? And you came here very directly at that- ten minutes, Eggsy?”

“It was good exercise.” Eggsy lifted his menu to hide his face- and his blush- from Harry. “And I thought about it, but nah. I ain’t giving George that kind of help, am I?”

Title: To Make a Beginning
Fandom: Kingsman
Pairing/Characters: Eggsy Unwin/Harry Hart + Tilde
Summary: Villains are thwarted, a princess rescues Eggsy more than the other way around, and Harry is a bit difficult- so probably a pretty average New Year's Eve, all things considered.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Short (2,414 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Happy belated New Year everyone! This fills the bodyguards square for my H/C bingo. The title comes from T.S. Eliot apparently: “For last year’s words belong to last year’s language. And next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.” I found that searching New Year's quote compilations (as one does) and liked it. Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt: After he got her and all the other VIPs who had told Valentine that he could go to hell out of that bunker, Eggsy had kept in touch with Tilde. It had been relatively clear from the beginning, given what had already happened- and not happened- between them, that their future relations would never have been of the romantic variety, not even if Harry hadn’t turned out to be alive.

But Harry had turned out to be alive, and Tilde’s advice on that subject had always been to snap Harry up as soon as possible.

Title: The Brightest of Signs
Fandom: Kingsman
Pairing/Characters: Harry Hart + Roxy Morton, Harry/Eggsy, Roxy/Merlin
Summary: Harry talks Roxy through a mission just before Christmas.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Medium (5,083 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: This fills the motion sickness square for my H/C bingo. The backstory I give Harry in this might not be to all tastes; it popped into my head the very first time I saw the movie and I’ve had a really had time letting it go. The title is from Harbor by Vienna Teng.  Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt: Harry could practically hear the wheels in Lancelot’s head turning as she put what he had just told her together with everything she already knew about him- very little that Eggsy hadn’t told her, most likely, since this was the longest conversation the two of them had yet had. And Eggsy might not have told her very much at all; Harry had noticed that Eggsy could be rather territorial of him, disinclined to share him with anyone- even his closest friend in the organization.

Title: Feels Like Home
Fandom: Kingsman
Pairing/Characters: Eggsy Unwin/Harry Hart
Summary: Harry learns to like holding Eggsy- perhaps too much.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Medium (6,328 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: This fills the "hugs" square for my H/C bingo. This was meant to be a 5 + 1 but I'm not really sure what it is now.  Thanks to klaudos for the beta. Not Brit-picked.
Excerpt: Harry had seen Merlin’s footage from when the dormitory flooded- he knew that Eggsy was all lean muscle, so he was surprised by how soft Eggsy went in his arms. He’s so young, Harry thought, an unexpected surge of protectiveness going through him. He tightened his grip on Eggsy without meaning to. Despite Eggsy’s immediate protest when Harry had offered him a way out, Harry wondered, briefly, if he might not have been a poor choice for Lancelot after all.

There was nothing for it, of course. Harry hadn’t lied when he told Eggsy that he saw great potential in him, and Eggsy would succeed or he wouldn’t. All Harry could do now was wait and see.

Title: Plus One
Fandom: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Pairing/Characters: Bashir/Garak, Original Characters
Summary: Julian works in a hospital on Cardassia after the war and learns some new things.
Rating: PG or PG-13
Length: Medium (6,232 words)
Disclaimer: These characters aren't mine.
Notes/Warnings: This makes some assumptions about Cardassian courtship that aren’t necessarily supported by the canon, but I just wanted to write a fic where Garak and Bashir's relationship was kind of a quintessential Cardassian courtship; everything else I just made up as I went along.
Excerpt: “How are you, Garak?” Julian asked when he sat down. Complicated though things had been between them ever since Elina’s engagement, he was still happy to see his friend whenever he did. In truth, Garak had been cool with him since before the engagement- he had been cool with him since he came to Cardassia- but it wasn’t until after the engagement that Julian finally realized the indefinable something that had been missing from their friendship since they both left Deep Space Nine was that Garak was no longer flirting with him

Title: An Accidental Engagement
Fandom: The Hobbit
Pairing/Characters: Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield, Fili/Kili/Tauriel, Dis, The Company
Summary: Bilbo's fake-it-'til-you-make-it interpretation of dwarven culture is working quite well for him, thank you very much- all the way up until it really, really isn't.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Medium (8,445 words)
Disclaimer: None of this belongs to me, except the things I made up about dwarf courting.
Notes/Warnings: Apologies for all the background OT3 that happened in this fic.  You can read Kili's POV of the events in this story in A Different Path, which is much more explicit than this fic.
Excerpt: “It’s something I’ve been working on, for Thorin. It’s a … chronicle. Of our adventure.” Bilbo thought that would be fine thing for Thorin to have, but suddenly he found himself wondering if it was a suitable gift for a king. “That is… right, isn’t it?”

“Yes,” Kíli said eagerly. He was practically glowing. “Since you’re not one for dwarven crafts, that is. It’s a work of your hands and a very symbolic one too. It’s perfectly appropriate.”

Bilbo glanced at Fíli for confirmation, and found him unusually pale. But then, Kíli was elbowing him rather hard and perhaps in a place that was still tender. “Yes,” Fíli agreed at last, and conjured a slow smile. “It’s appropriate.”

Title: Auld Lang Syne
Fandom: The Blacklist
Pairing/Characters: Elizabeth Keen/Raymond Reddington
Summary: Not one of Liz’s better ideas.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Very short (437 words)
Disclaimer: Just borrowing these characters.
Notes/Warnings: I’m not saying that Red is Liz’s father in this story or that I believe he is, but I’m not completely closing the door on it either, so if you need that extra cushion you might want to give this one a miss. Though I doubt many people reading will recognize it, I want to mention that this fic was inspired by a scene in the first episode of a show called The Big Valley. In it, a woman tries to prove that a man who claims to be her half brother isn’t by seducing him, based on the notion that he wouldn't kiss her if he really believed they were related. Anyway, my brain decided that this + The Blacklist would be magic. I wanted to get it off my chest before the series came back.
Excerpt: There was a moment where all Liz could do was ask herself if she was really doing this: playing incest chicken with a master criminal at the beginning of the new year. Did she think he’d hesitate at the last minute? Peck her awkwardly on the cheek against his character, who was meant to be deeply in love with his younger girlfriend? Did she intend to shout ‘aha!’ as soon as they were out of that room and force him to finally give her a straight answer?

potentiality_26: (musketeers)
Title: Brand New Start
Fandom: The Musketeers
Pairing/Characters: Athos/Constance/d'Artagnan, Aramis, Porthos, Ninon
Summary: Modern AU: Constance always has trouble with the holidays. This year may or may not be worse than usual.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Medium (9,021 words)
Disclaimer: These characters don't belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: My Christmas offering. This was originally conceived as kind of an office AU, which was a silly idea for me to have because- as is undoubtedly apparent- I know very little about working in an office. I fiddled with it a bit and as a result the characters work… somewhere, doing… something, and are frighteningly unprofessional about it.  Title from "Drunken Angel" by Thea Gilmore, from her holiday album Strange Communion.
Excerpt: After that, Constance went upstairs and took a shower, as if she could wash away the painful wish that she had just said yes to d’Artagnan’s offer and was currently driving home to see his family with him. She reminded herself of why she’d said no- because she did have work to do, and anyway spending Christmas with the family was a big move for two people who had only been dating for a few months. A voice in her head protested that it was more likely her attachment to her own self-imposed isolation that had made her say no, even when she’d already made the leap and started dating d’Artagnan in the first place. The voice sounded horribly like Athos.

Constance reminded the Athos-voice that he had no business talking about self-imposed isolation, and did what she always did when her life just didn’t seem right.

She went to work.

Title: Having Plans
Fandom: Longmire
Pairing/Characters: Henry Standing Bear/Vic Moretti/Walt Longmire, The Ferg, mentions of Vic/Ed Gorski and Vic/Sean Moretti
Summary: Sequel to Endings and Beginnings
Rating: PG-13
Length: Short (2,855 words)
Disclaimer: These lovely characters are not mine.
Notes/Warnings: So, this is probably not everything everyone was hoping for in a sequel to Ending and Beginnings. What can I say? I was inspired by Henry’s least favorite holiday, and then I needed a few days to get it off the ground. I adore Vic’s family in the book series, but since I’m pretty sure that the whole Gorski business would not have gone down like it did on their watch I have concluded that TV canon Vic’s family is very different, and I don't recall any mentions of them in the series, so I used that as an excuse to make them less than awesome.
Excerpt: “What are you doing for Thanksgiving?” Vic asked.

If the non-sequitur bothered Walt, he didn’t show it. “The same thing I always am, probably. Having a dinner of things which are not turkey, cranberry sauce or sweet potatoes with Henry. Sometimes Cady comes along. Sometimes not.”

“And this year?”

“I think she’s going to visit some friends from law school. As is probably evident, it was never a big family event, even when Martha was still with us.”

Title: Scars
Fandom: The Musketeers
Pairing/Characters: Athos/d'Artagnan, Aramis, Porthos
Summary: Athos' shot leaves a scar. He and d'Artagnan have different ways of looking at it.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Short (1,580 words)
Disclaimer: These characters don't belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Written for this prompt. Apologies if the ending seems… abrupt. Fading to black is not my greatest skill.
Excerpt: “Porthos and Aramis wanted me to see you.”

Athos seemed sufficiently dazed that d’Artagnan wondered if they hadn’t in fact deposited him on d’Artagnan’s doorstep, knocked, and ran.

Title: Other Factors
Fandom: The Musketeers
Pairing/Characters: Athos/Treville, Aramis, d'Artagnan
Summary: Athos and Treville are caught in a trap.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Short (1,788 words)
Disclaimer: These characters don't belong to me.
Notes/Warnings: Written for this prompt. I have made it a near death experience fic rather than actual character death, because a) the prompt seemed to leave an opening for it and b) I’m a marshmallow.
Excerpt: “Is it that bad?”

“Not at all,” Athos said. It was difficult to tell if he was lying. “Aramis will have it good as new.”

Treville concluded that Athos believed what he was saying- but he knew that the faith his Inseparables had in Aramis’ healing abilities did sometimes stretch beyond the power of medicine. What was more, there was no way to be sure Aramis was even coming- coming soon, anyway- and Treville could feel himself fading. If he fell asleep, he wasn’t sure he’d wake again.

Title: Agent and Hawkeye's Epic Romance
Fandom: The Avengers
Pairing/Characters: Clint Barton/Phil Coulson, Pepper Potts/Tony Stark, Bruce Banner. Natasha Romanov, Steve Rogers (implied Bucky/Steve), Thor
Summary: Tony is just trying to build a supportive workplace.  Really.
Rating: PG-13
Length: Medium (6,108 words)
Disclaimer: None of these characters are mine.
Notes/Warnings: Written for this prompt on cc_feelsmeme.  This prompt is almost two years old.  I have, accordingly, written the fic like it is two years.  So... warnings for nostaglia?
Excerpt: ‘Odd’ being such an expansive term, Tony had honestly expected Jarvis to produce an explanation for Barton’s behavior to the effect of, ‘He only likes to sleep in trees or on the roofs of very tall buildings’ instead of what he eventually found: paperwork.

Spousal paperwork, because apparently SHIELD had stock forms for handler/agent weddings, a notion that, frankly, horrified Tony.
