Shipping Meme Day Seven
May. 7th, 2014 09:27 pmA pairing that disappointed you:
From Ugly Betty, Betty/every guy she ever dated. So, Walter- her boyfriend in the first season- was annoying and always on his way out, so he doesn't really count, but with all the others the show would spent all this time building up this great guy, and then suddenly decide it didn't like him anymore, and turn him into a jerk.
Henry's exit, at least, was drawn from things already set up in the narrative, but by the time Gio got a total personality transplant, things got weird. I never liked Jesse, but the way they depicted him when they wanted to get rid of him didn't make any sense either, and by the time Matt came along I'd decided to stop getting emotionally invested in Betty's relationships, and I was right, too, because things with Matt fell apart in a big way too, and as with all the others it was completely out of left field.
No one on Ugly Betty every really got to have a real, long term relationship, but those of all the other major characters were handled with a lot more delicacy than those of the main character, which is a big flaw for a show to have. I loved a lot of things about the show, but Betty's romantic relationships were never among them.
I wasn't really a Betty/Daniel shipper, but if that had been obviously endgame then it would have at least seemed that all the relationship sabotage was to an end- but... no dice.
