I certainly write my share of stories where Artie is gay or bi, so I'm not utterly against it, and I've got one in the works where Jim starts out thinking of himself as totally straight, which is unusual for me- but a part of me will always see Artie as the straighter of the two, and I'm not really sure why- maybe because when it comes to girls it's always so obvious that Jim is doing whatever he has to do to get her to help him, and isn't emotionally invested in the flirting at all (there was maybe once in the whole series that I detected any chemistry at all between Jim and girl of the week), whereas Artie actually cares. I've just found that I tend toward that reading, and it's interesting to me that so few others do.
I'm definitely not saying that I like Jeremy better than Artie, just that he's a cool character and he adds something interesting to the narrative, and it frustrates me when writers are dismissive of him.
I love Doctor Loveless too. Every time he's happy about something, I feel that joy, no matter what it's about. And a lot of the time when he's angry (which is a lot of the time), I agree with him. To a certain extent, his grievance against Jim is solid. I mean, the first time they met, Jim pretended to be on his side, and I think a part of Loveless has been trying to show Jim that that should have been true ever since. I tend to call it a man crush, what Loveless has for Jim, and I can never a 100% make up my mind about how much of a sexual aspect there is to it. I mean, there's an aesthetic appreciation- and of course there would be, because damn- but I'm never sure, for myself, how far I think it goes. I'm working on a fic where I explore it a little more, and it can work for me, I just waffle about it somewhat.
Sorry about all the "I'm working on a fic where..." stuff. Apparently when my brain decided that this show was where it wanted to hang its hat for the next while, it meant I was going to write all the fic, and I always have several going at once. It makes for somewhat scattered discourse, because a lot of the time I haven't entirely figured out how I feel about something until I'm writing about it.
