I saw Jupiter Ascending
Feb. 8th, 2015 11:20 pmGotta say, I thought it was great. We're talking pure trashy joy.
Was it perfect? No. But this is probably the first time I've gone to a sci-fi movie and thought it was made more to appeal to the female viewer than a male one. Were some of the assumptions the movie made about what constitutes a female wish-fulfillment fantasy-type movie as opposed to man's problematic? Yeah. It didn't keep me from enjoying it, though.
Everyone who's decided that this is a wildly sexist movie because God forbid gratuitously shirtless Channing Tatum have to save the everyday-human girl from peril she had no idea existed two days ago should maybe... chill a little? Like, she was exactly the degree of helpless I would expect of a person in her position.
Yes, if this was a movie where the every man (every person?) character was male, they probably would have made space for a 'becoming badass' training montage, and yes, that says something less than awesome about the industry at large. But this was a movie with a very short timeline happening, and when the protagonist was 'helpless' it was only because she had no idea what was going on, and that was because there was almost no time for anyone to explain to her. Like, she actually handled herself pretty well before the end.
Anyway, I loved it. I guess it's something everyone has to make up their own mind about.
