SGU

So, I've mentioned before that I periodically try to watch Stargate Universe, right?  Well I've recently given it another shot and I'm maybe halfway through S1 and-

Well, I still wouldn't say I liked it, but it is almost enjoyable when the characters aren't yelling at each other.  The main problem is that that almost never happens.  Also, I remember seeing that clip from the SG-1 episode "200" where everyone is really young and it's all poorly lit and focused on silly issues and someone had said, "Oh, look, it's SGU" and that is just so true.

My main issue is that I just don't like any of the characters.  The best I get is not disliking them (mainly TJ and Camille Wray at the moment, and it's cool in the latter case to finally have an explicitly LGBT character on Stargate).  I often want to like Rush- that morally ambiguous, for the greater good most of the time thing he has going on is totally my jam- but he's just so inconsistant.  I'd feel sorry for Robert Carlyle (he tries so damn hard to make it work) if I didn't know something worse lay ahead of him (resolutely does not look at OUAT and what it did to the characters I loved).

Also, I have such a bone to pick about the use of the communication stones.  It was a concept that always had the potential to be creepy, but until SGU they avoided some of the more questionable aspects pretty well.  But suddenly no one thinks it's at all odd for these people to casually have sex while in other people's bodies?  I get that these people must have agreed to play host with some idea of what it might entail, but still- really?

Anyway, I soldier on.  Are there any good episodes I should keep an eye out for going forward?

I can't think of any right now, off the top of my head. But alas, the only characters I really 'liked' (maybe) were Young and Rush. Those two just needed to have hate!sex and get over it.

Eli is pumpd up for no reason. Daniel Jackson he is not. And everyone dislikes Rush so much, that they go out of their way to NOT get to know him. There are good stories and good episodes, but in the end, I just watched for RC and that was it.

*HUGS*

Lol, yeah they totally do- but while I can "see" those kind of ships I never really enjoy them. So far I've only shipped Rush and Young while they were on the same page and that lasted for like eight seconds. And Young isn't a bad character, to be sure, I'm just not at all moved by his plotline thus far, so he grates on me.

I totally agree about Eli. He's such a self-inserty character, which is only at all satisfying to audience members who can actually see themselves in the character. Otherwise it's just "Why does everyone in this show think he's so great?"

I do love RC, but Rush's characterization just reminds me so much of the worst parts of Rumpelstiltskin on OUAT. It's not that there's nothing redeemable about him, just that the people writing him either don't know or don't care to bring it out, and watching everyone hate and distrust him is no fun.

All the fighting and always being at odd drove me crazy!

The only time the communication stones have worked for me was in the Ori-arc of SG-1 and there I loved how they were used. I have issues with how they are used in SGU, same as you.

Ugh, yes.

Yeah, the concept definitely worked much better on SG-1.
