Fandom Snowflake Challenge: Day 1

Day 1

In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane.

2018 was a rough year (especially in- er- political terms), and fandom has definitely been my haven.  I can't zero in on a specific fandom, since I've been through quite a few, but it's been very important to remind myself that I can create and make connections with people who share my interests (both of which are difficult when I'm as stressed as I have been for the last couple of years). 

I write and plan out a fair amount of original fiction- though my production has gone down over the last few years, because of the aforementioned stress- and I do love it, but writing fanfiction in particular remains my happy place.  I like taking characters I already love and know other people love and putting them in different situations.  I love playing with popular tropes.  What I think I miss, when writing original fiction, is the feeling that it's a conversation.  With the source material, with the readers, with the other people writing for that fandom, and with the people writing for other fandoms too.  It's a process that means so much to me.

This has been quite the difficult year, but it's nice there's still things that make us happy. That feeling of connection with so many other people when you write fic is just... such a wonderful thing. You'd think writing would be a really solitary hobby, but in a lot of a ways, it's not! Here's hoping to take those wonderful feeling into the new year ^^

Yes, no matter how hard the real world is, escaping into the better worlds (whether original or not) we create with our words is definitely a truly happy place.

Totally agree on all fronts. Happy new year my friend, I hope 2019 is better on all counts ♥ and the stress goes down. I know I'd be lost without my fandom happy places. And 46 fics is amazing! I enjoyed reading your fic meme, I'm sorry I am poor at commenting, I'm hoping to get better at that this year, the conversation is something I miss too.
