I think King Lear is one of the hardest Shakespeare plays to perform -- imho, the hardest are the ones where it's toughest for modern audiences to relate to the emotional content because of the passage of time.
I haven't seen it in ages but I have great memories of the version where John Hurt plays the Fool.
