Make a rec list of fanworks!

Ah, rec lists; love to find 'em, hate to make 'em. I have a ton of saved fics that I love and a very difficult time picking favorites, so I'll just rec some recent greats.

Day 2

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

Three feels like too few, but if I really cracked open my favorites we'd be here all day, so instead here are five recent favorites (each from different fandoms):

A Heaven in Hell's Despair by belmanoir (Raffles, Bunny/Raffles)
Really lovely pining vs. obliviousness story with great characterization and use of the canon.

Sentiment to Paper by mistyzeo (Sherlock Holmes, Holmes/Watson)
It's worth going through all of this writer's fics if you haven't, but this one really spoke to me.  Wonderful premise, wonderful execution, wonderful prose- just wonderful all around.

Etta Candy's Last Stand by sanguinity (Wonder Woman, Etta/Diana)
Really sweet and so, so funny.

Fairies Aren't Gentlemen by AMarguerite (Jeeves & Wooster and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, Jeeves/Wooster)
This captures Bertie's voice beautifully and blends the two universes in a way that I think sets the golden standard for JSAMN crossovers.  It's so good.

Degrees of Latitude by x_los (David Copperfield, David/Uriah)
It's also worth going through all this writer's fics if you've an interest in this rare pair.  And this particular fic hit pretty much all of my buttons and then found new ones I didn't even know I had.  I love it.

Choose 5 OTP’s without looking at the questions behind the cut first, then tag friends to do the same.

1)      Aramis/Athos/Porthos (The Musketeers)
2)      Henry/Walt (Longmire)
3)      Ava/Boyd/Raylan (Justified)
4)      Belle/Rumplestiltskin (Once Upon a Time)
5)      Clint/Phil (MCU)

I cheated a little and did some OT3s (not that I'm the only one).  I couldn't help myself.

Check out this awesome article about fan culture and why it's so unfortunate that reporters keep asking actors about fanfiction.  It has some interesting statistics and thoughts about why so much slash fic gets written.  I'll warn diehard fans that Benedict Cumberbatch is quoted in a less than awesome light- if you're sensetive, be ready.

Also, Orlando Jones gets nod, which is nice.  He may not be able to make up for all the actors being really hostile about fanfiction out there, but sometimes it seems like he's trying.

Fic Rec

I'm probably going to do an actual Sherlock recs list at some point, but I just read Undoing Fate by sator_square and I need to recommend it right the hell now, so I'm going to.  It's Mycroft/Jim Moriarty, which is not really my thing and will continue not to be my thing, but this seriously good and actually rather sweet.  Well.  For a given value of the term.  But it's really good, okay?  If you haven't read it, you shouldn't let the pairing stop you.  If you can like a fic for this couple, I'm pretty sure it will be this one.

In it, Mycroft goes back in time to stop Jim from becoming Sherlock's nemesis in the first place.  Inserting a time travel plotline into this fandom seems a little tricky, but it comes across really well.  Mycroft can go back, change something, and then go forward again to see the effect- and then go back a bunch more times to get it right.  It's funny and exceedingly well written, but also very true to the characters.  Even when they hardly meet- and Jim is far more interested in Mycroft than in Sherlock- Sherlock and Jim have a really interesting give and take, and Mycroft's efforts to find the right balance are particularly interesting.  The development of his own relationship with Jim is fascinating as well.

My fic recs for the book series and the show, pretty exclusively Harry Dresden/John Marcone (some of which have a vaguely alluded to side order of Hendricks/Gard) for the books and Bob/Harry for the show.

Will be updated regularly!

Favorite crack pairing:

I have no single favorite crack pairing, but I generally enjoy 'absolutely-everyone-loves-this-one-character' fics.  The most shining example, in my view, is this Stargate SG-1 story: Avenging Jaffa by Sideburns.  It is amazingly funny, and probably my favorite crack fic period.  Go check it out (warning: there is some character death and general not-nice-ness, but it's handled in a funny way, and everything turns out okay at the end).

A ship you've just discovered:

I said to myself, "No more little fandoms.  No more fandoms that are basically just two other people and you."  I said to myself, "You don't need to put yourself through that again."  And I was doing well.  I was reading lots of Bilbo/Thorin fic, lots of Bucky/Steve.  I was even starting to write some (and I'll finish those; I swear).  I was on my goddamn way.  And then I started watching Longmire.  And then I read the book series it's based on.  I read it in like a week.  And I wasn't on my way anymore.

This isn't to say that nobody is watching it.  I mean, there are maybe thirty Longmire fics on AO3, which is tragically small for a series going into it's third year, but though the fandom is small they exist.  Mostly, it seems like the people come to look at Katee Sackhoff and enjoy her Starbuck-ness, and that's fine, whatever, I like Vic.  But despite being deeply- nay, ridiculously- slashy there is very little happening to that effect.  Maybe a half dozen stories and one fabulous vid (check it out!).  Woe.

But anyway, I really love Henry/Walt.  I love it like you would not believe, and I love Henry like another piece of my soul.  Henry/Vic/Walt as an OT3 does it for me too.  But anyway there's my New Year's Resolution broke.

Woe.

I’m posting a Doctor Who/The Wild Wild West crossover fic on AO3 (if you're interested, you can read it here) but I'm going to be posting some of my author's notes here so they don't clutter up the fic, so that's what those are about.

In related news, I'd like to enthusiastically recommend a Eight/Jacobi!Master fic: Cafestrolvalva by x-los. If you haven’t read it, you should check it out. It’s really, really great.

I'd noticed this before, but I was reading Classification Error (which is lovely, BTW) and it really struck me.  I mean, what happens in the story isn't exactly a normal pregnancy, but like I say I'd seen it before, and in het stories (I think the first time I saw it was in a Hermione/Snape fic rec, where her pregnancy was referred to as F-preg).  It seems to me that one could just tag it 'pregnancy.'  That is, in fact, how pregnancy normally goes.  Calling it F-preg makes it sound like it's "that thing that's basically M-preg, but with a girl."  We might even be getting toward a place where we're not expected know if a man or a woman is going to be pregnant in a story unless they tell us who at the outset.  Which- by the way- is fantastic.

Anyway, takeaway message: Classification Error= lovely and leveling the pregnancy playing field= fantastic!

The AO3 Major Character Death warning should have qualifiers?

I mean, I try to avoid stories where main characters die, and maybe I should stop because one of my favorite fics ever, The Night of the Setting Sun is a) a death-fic and the kind of the death-fic that makes all the others seem trite and overdone in the face of it's gorgeous simplicity and b) not sad so much as true, exactly everything the canon was telling you would happen if everything one day went very, very wrong.  Also, it probably would have benefited from not having to declare itself.

Okay, I was getting away from my original point there.  My comment is this: shouldn't some fandoms have a canon-typical character death tag the same way there is a canon typical violence tag where you can get away with leaving out the graphic depictions of violence warning because it's Cabin in the Woods or whatever and it's unlikely to be worse than what people already signed up for?

I mean, fics that at certain times in their respective series killed Rory Williams/Daniel Jackson/Nathan Petrelli would really just be business as usual, right?  And he'd keep coming back, wouldn't he?

Anyway, I happen to think a character who gets killed and then brought back again should get a free pass for a while, but if the canon has already gone there...
