A show you hate
Hate is a strong word, and I don't like throwing it around, so I will say that I really, strongly dislike Revolution. I'm fascinated by post-apocalyptic series, especially ones that use the loss of modern technology to give an old-timey feel. I love series with large casts, particularly when the antagonists are regulars too, giving us the chance to look deeper into what makes them tick. I enjoy Supernatural and always liked Kripke's episodes in particular. I have a weakness for emotionally fraught male friends-turned-enemies plotlines. I'm always on the lookout for shows with sword fighting.
I wanted to like Revolution. It seems like it would be perfect for me, and plenty of people enjoy it- but I just really, really don't. Actually, now that I think about it, hate isn't too strong a word. I do actually hate Revolution. Don't read on if you like the show and don't want me harshing your buzz. I still love you, and I hope you still love me.
There's really only one reason for it, too. I don't like a single one of the characters. Nora was all right, in that I never would have traded all my possessions to be able to reach through my TV and smack some sense into her (as I would many of the other major characters), but I wouldn't have said I genuinely liked her. Otherwise, my favorite character was Sebastian Monroe- not that I liked him, either, just that he was consistent. Everyone else changed their opinions about things- and sometimes aspects of their personality- from episode to episode. Is Miles Charlie's best-est buddy today, or does she hate his guts? It always felt like the writers pulled these things out of a hat. There were always reasons for the characters to rethink their opinions about the other characters, but no matter how far into the series I got, when I should have started to feel like I knew the people pretty well, I couldn't guess how they were going to react to anything. And often, once I'd found out how they'd reacted, it would be different in the next episode. Sometimes the next scene. When the show had character exposition, I was bored because I didn't care to learn more about those people; I just didn't like them. When the show had action, I was equally bored because I didn't worry about those people; I just didn't like them. A lot of the time, I was rooting for everyone but Nora to meet with a terrible accident. But who dies at the end of season one? Guess.
