potentiality_26Saddest character death
This is a downer to finish on, isn't it? There are, to me, two different kinds of sad character death: the kind of pointless, frustrating, miserable character death- Torchwood, I'm looking at you- that really just alienates the people who love the show, and well handled character death that makes you sad because you loved that character rather than just angry because they died. I'm going with the latter, because it's the closest thing to a positive tack I can take with this, and a great example is from Sanctuary.
I know a lot of people were, in fact, really angry about how Ashley died on Sanctuary, and that's valid- but I thought it was beautiful. Her death in itself was sudden and raw- which a lot of shows try to do and end up just making pointless- but also heroic, and then we got an entire episode to say goodbye in "Eulogy." It was a gutsy move on the writers' part, in my opinion, to have their main character convinced that Ashely wasn't really dead and that she could still save her for the whole episode and then have her be ultimately unable to do so, and I thought it was delicately handled- and as a fan I also enjoyed it because it left me an opening to imagine that she might have survived, just not in one of the ways Helen had thought of. I loved her and I missed her when she was gone, but I thought she got a lovely send-off.
