I don't think Clint/Coulson is suppose to make sense in a fandom-sense. They have personalities that mesh and a plethora of possibilities. Whether or not they talked on screen (in the audience eye-sight) is kind of irrelevant. We know Clint works for Fury. Coulson works for Fury. They have had contact for a while (Tesseract project) and what the audience sees are 'main points' in a tale. I mean, we don't see these guys on coffee-breaks, do we? LOL!!
So they can be shipped, it can make sense, even if we don't see anything on the screen to have that happen. I mean, take my Eleven/Rory obsession - we know they have spent time together. But the story is about Amy and her Raggedy Doctor, not Rory and the Doctor. We see the tiniest of glimpses that they have talked, they have a friendship (even if a tense and odd one) and yet, we never see that on the screen. And I ship them like MAD, omg...
