I've been looking at a few fic writing memes recently. It'll be a few months before I break down and do one, most likely, but looking through some of the questions did get me thinking. One question in particular- asking the writer to say which of their fics was most popular or well liked- interested me. When an author writes in multiple fandoms, some larger than others, it gets difficult to judge popularity, because it so obviously has more to do with the popularity of the fandom than the popularity of the fic.
For instance, if I were to sort my fic by the number of kudos, the fics for the larger fandoms would- as you might expect- be on top (OUAT and Avengers/AOS). But I've also just published a fic for Mr. Lucky, the tiniest of tiny fandoms, a show that didn't appear on the archives list until me and aired in the late fifties. I have two hits and two kudos on it. One of them is a friend of mine who I'd mentioned writing the fic to before. I have no idea who the other is, but whoever they were they read it as soon as the fandom appeared on the fandom list, which to me suggests that they were waiting for this day. In a way, I feel like that one kudo is the greater compliment.
In related news- how often does your muse get inspired based on what you're doing that particular day? It's possible that's where the first coffee shop AU came from- but to stay on topic, I took my dog to the vet, which to my brain equaled: "You want to write a veterinarian AU for your current main fandom." Nice going, brain. I needed that.

Date: 2014-06-10 04:56 am (UTC)THAT. IS AWESOME. And yes, that is the better Kudos in so many, many ways. I feel that way about two of my most popular fictions that are LEAST popular in pairing/genre. They have the most favs, follows, kudos and comments - and yet, they are not only rarepair, they are also dark!fic (no surprise, I'm sure). So getting a Kudos, comment or fav on a smaller fandom/pairing/genre...that is the best feeling in the world!
It has happened once or twice *grins* That being said...you should totally write that!
*HUGS*

Date: 2014-06-10 06:55 pm (UTC)Writing in a big fandonm for a big ship is great in a lot of ways, but there's always so many great fics to choose from in those big fandoms. But when you write for a small fandom (or rare pair or unusual genre) and a few people really love it, it's a different kind of satisfaction. You get to feel like you gave someone something they couldn't get anywhere else.
:) As always, I go where the muse takes me...
