I may do a more intelligent reaction post a little later, but right now I just need to say that I love her and Jarvis and everything, but.  BUT-

Movies and TV shows always do this thing where there's a strong female protagonist in a story set in the past, and it's all woman in a man's world and there's this whole self-congratulatory tone to it like "Look how hard it was in them sexist times.  They didn't understand what a woman is capable of."  And it's bizarre because yes, things are better now.  But I wouldn't call them sexist times completely gone, either.

Just something that bugged me.

I get what you mean...sometimes, instead of just telling the story and letting the story show you how awesome it is, they have to point out what MAKES it awesome, which...colors the awesomeness somewhat. Pointing out how forward thinking you are makes you LESS forward thinking in so many ways.

Exactly. In Captain America, they never really took that tone. Peggy was awesome because she was, instead of because how competent she was was like some kind of secret only us and the writers got to be in on.

Yeah, I knew America was incredibly sexist but I had no IDEA HOW MUCH until I left California and started a govt job on the east coast, cripes, it's NUTS it might as well be the 1950s.

So true. There are definitely places in this country where the 1950s don't seem like they were all that long ago at all.
