I'm having trouble tagging a work on AO3 and I thought I'd take a survey of the room to see if anyone has strong opinions on the subject.

Put under a cut for The Hobbit spoilers.
Does an LOTR fic that references canon character deaths from The Hobbit require a Major Character Death tag?  Said references aren't the focus of the story, and obviously I'm putting a 'Canonical Character Deaths' tag on it, but I can still make a case for either choice.

What do you guys think?

Personally, when I tag canonical character death I do NOT "warn for major character death". I only warn for it when it's not canon.

That makes sense. That way it's sort of reserved for when you're killing a character in your fic.

Thanks for the feedback!

If it's not the major focus of the story, I don't think adding the "Major Character Death" tag is necessary, since that would mean there is a major character death happening in the story itself. Just as long as there is a warning about referencing canon character deaths, then you should be fine.

Yeah, that's mostly what I thought. Thanks for the feedback!

I generally stick with 'Canon' unless you have someone who is dying and it is NOT canon. Major character death usually holds for that.

That makes sense. Thanks!
