On 8tracks

Kingsman: The Secret Service is an action comedy somewhere between an homage to old school Bond films and a spoof of them. It’s a really fun movie, and very refreshing if you’re tired of spy movies with the same “gritty” set-up, the same (often slightly forced) romance between the male and female leads, and the same tormented and isolated protagonist. Kingsman is bombastic and stylized and sometimes actively meta, there’s no romantic subplot to speak of, and the protagonist, Eggsy Unwin, is all about his connections to other people, all about how much he cares.

Eggsy gets recruited by a veteran spy- Harry Hart- as a possible replacement for another agent who was recently killed. Most of Kingsman is about the training/trials Eggsy and his fellow potential recruits go through (as well as the investigation into that agent’s death), but my favorite part of the movie is the relationship between Eggsy and Harry, which is the focus of this mix.

I think what makes their relationship so interesting (and so easy to read as romantic, if you’re into that kind of thing) is that it develops so fast. They meet, they bicker just a little, and then- despite being very different (there’s a large age gap between them and they come from practically opposite social classes and backgrounds) they grow close quickly, and bring out sides of each other that you don’t see anywhere else in the movie. They also have very little time together overall, because Harry gets killed by the villain (although the fans of course have come up with a number of ways he might still be alive) directly after the second fight he and Eggsy ever have, and Eggsy goes after the bad guys himself- and racks up quite the body count despite never having killed anyone before.  However you read their relationship, it's pretty profound.

1. Deus Ex Machina- If These Trees Could Talk

(Instrumental)

2. Friday I'm In Love- The Cure

I don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too
Thursday I don't care about you
It's Friday I'm in love

3. Bones- Editors

In the end all you can hope for
Is the love you felt to equal the pain you've gone through
Are your eyes showing off for mine
Your face in my hands is everything that I need

4. Slow Hands- Interpol

Can't you see what you've done to my heart
And soul?
This is a wasteland now

5. An Ugly Fact of Life- Explosions in the Sky

(Instrumental)

6. The Grace- Neverending White Lights

You're not coming back for me, these things they will never be
I'm so used to being wrong, so put me where I belong

7. My Vampire Heart- Tom McRae

Here we are
In the darkest place
My reflection
Shows only your face

8. A Pound of Flesh- Radical Face

I can still hear your feet as you ran from the house
Knowing you won’t be back doesn’t mean that I will stop waiting
You told me then, hold me down, hold me up to the fire
But don’t you dare hold me back

9. The Beginning After the End- Stars

(Instrumental)

Thanks! I'm not too good at album art, so I'm really glad these turned out well.

God I adore the instrumental tracks you've put on this. As well as how you've framed the mix with them by putting one at the begging, one in the middle and one at the end. It makes for a nice effect :)

I love My Vampire Heart; it always makes me feel so melancholy and that works really well here. The last song tied everything together perfectly.

Very nice mix, it tugged at my heartstrings.

My Vampire Heart is actually the song I started with for this mix! It gets me every time.

Thank you!

Excellent mix! 8tracks is being a bit weird - it says the mix has 9 tracks but only ever plays 8 - I think it's missing the track The Grace - but I love the song choices and cover art.

Well done!

Thanks! I can't find a problem from my end, but 8tracks isn't exactly intuitive that way, so who knows what its deal is. Glad you enjoyed the mix all the same.

Thank you!

I think 8tracks is a bit wonky at the moment - i have some older playlists that are 10 songs but only show up as being 19 minutes in total length and I know they are longer - guessing something at their end.

That makes sense. 8tracks decided this mix was 6 minutes long for a while when I was first posting it, so yeah, hopefully just an issue with the site.

The instrumental tracks in this work really well. I love the emotional journey in this and the instrumentals really help with that. It fits *them* very well too, thank you!

This mix feels really stylized to me - like music that has a 60s British Punk sound/feel, but isn't. Kinda like the not-quite-60s spy feel of the movie :) I really like it!
