First of all, if any or most or even (heaven forefend) all of you have not seen this show, SEE THIS SHOW. I need to not be alone in this. Go. Behold the pretty.

I'm sticking some commentary under a cut so you can skip it if you want, but I've avoided plot spoilers, so if you want to let me to try to sell you on this show...

Come into my office )

This show is ridiculous, you guys.  But I love it so much.

Couple you will still ship a few years from now:

First of all, I'm not precognitive.  Just putting that out there in case there was confusion.  But as I said before I rarely stop liking a pairing altogether, so I'm sure there are plenty I'll still ship years from now even if I'm not thinking about them regularly.  But if I have to pick one, I'll say Holmes/Watson (original ACD canon).  First of all, it's long done so it's not like it can piss me off or anything.  Second of all, new adaptions may come and go, but those core characters will always be fascinating, to me and lots of other people, so there will always be more to enjoy.

A couple you shipped not nearly as long as you thought you would:

Hmm.  I very rarely stop shipping a pairing, to be honest.  I tend to go crazy for a shiny new fandom, and the last shiny new fandom will begin to go by the wayside, but just because I stop actively looking for fic doesn't mean I don't still get excited if I stumble across a new one that looks like my cup of tea.

So, I guess I'm going a little outside the box for this one.  Les Miserables is basically my favorite thing in the world, right?  It's my favorite book and I re-read it every few years, it's my favorite musical, it's not my favorite movie mainly because my expectations are so damn high, but you get the picture.  So, when I was discovering fanfic for the first time, I also discovered this fabulous site and had a lot of fun.  There are ships of every flavor (also Grantaire/Enjolras is basically canon, you guys) and lots of great fic.  My point is, I love Les Miz a lot, but I did forget about fic for it somewhere along the way.  I wrote a couple one-shots when I was first starting out, but given how very much I love it, I'm sort of surprised that I wasn't more active than I was, looking back.

Best historical couple:

I don't know what this means, frankly.  Something from a historical novel/play?  RPF?  If it's the first, I like Elizabeth/Mr. Darcy and other Austen couples.  I like a lot of Dickens couples too.  And Shakespeare.  If it's real life couples... I got nothin'.

Favorite villain pairing:

Hmm.  I've never been much of a villain pairing person.  For me, at least one of the people has to be a good guy.  That said, I sometimes enjoy Moran/Moriarty in the various Sherlock Holmes incarnations.  A lot of people produced really interesting fanworks with a Moran they made up for Sherlock before S3 came out, and those were cool.  But it bears mentioning that what made me grow to like the pair in the first place was "A Study in Emerald" (which is a Sherlock Holmes characters in Lovecraft's universe short story by Neil Gaiman, if you haven't read it; it's amazing) and they aren't exactly villains there.

Favorite mini series

I love a lot of the BBC's costume dramas, and it's a little hard to pick a favorite, but I'm going with Our Mutual Friend.  Dickens' novel is one of my favorites, and the script for this film is fantastic- nearly every word of it lifted from the book.  A few subplots were removed- with a story like Our Mutual Friend, a few have to be- but the spirit remains.  The casting and acting is superb- each character seems to have walked right out of the novel.  Not only is it a great mini series, I think it may be the best adaptation of a book I've seen.

A show you thought you wouldn't like but ended up loving

I'm not sure I'd say that I really thought much about whether I would like Sleepy Hollow or not, but I remember being unenthused by the prospect when I first heard about it.  There's something about films and TV shows based on horror classics from to 18th and 19th centuries that tend to rub me the wrong way- because the writers seem to have something against the actual source material.  Everyone calls Dracula the great classic of the vampire genre, and yet no movie, TV show or mini-series I've seen has ever actually followed the story from the book (not even the BBC, which is usually good about that kind of thing).  Everyone has to put their own spin on it- disregarding Bram Stoker's spin almost entirely.  Likewise with Frankenstein (I mean, I'll probably see I, Frankenstein, but I really don't know what the deal with that is, and now there's some Igor movie coming as well.  *Sigh*), and so on and so forth.  The Burton Sleepy Hollow movie got allowances from me because, in making a movie based on a short story, you have to take some liberties- but a modern show that brings in a whole Biblical apocalyptic battle?  Why even bother to make it Sleepy Hollow when it's clearly something else entirely?  A lot of people asked that question, and I expected to agree.

But I watched it and I had a whole lot of fun.  While I don't think that people who criticize the show entirely have the wrong end of the stick, I enjoy the hell out of it all the same.  I love the characters and all the bizarre twists and the general monster-mashy feel of it.  It's so crazy- and so unashamed of its craziness- that I love it very much.  I can't wait to see what they do next!
