I thought I'd give an update on how SGU is going for me.  Spoilers through 2x08 (if you haven't watched it still but care for some reason).

Some observations:

  • I guess I'm starting to get attached to these characters, but I still don't understand who thought any of this was a good idea.  Like SG-1 and SGA were great, successful shows with a very specific tone to them, and at some point a couple of guys turned to each other and said, "This, but with bad lighting and everyone yelling at each other all the time.  This, but no fun."

  • Ugh the lighting so terrible.  The women tend to look really really pretty all framed in shadow and I bet you can make lovely icons out of it, but it is so hard to tell what's going on sometimes.

  • Seriously Rush is so much like Rumpelstiltskin I almost wonder if it isn't by design.  I don't mean RC's acting choices either, he's just the same kind of character who makes the same kind of decisions and gets the same level of dislike and mistrust (some earned and some not) from the other characters.

  • I have a lot of feelings about Rush/Mandy, so of course shit gets tragic.

  • I still think the use of the stones in this show is pretty questionable, but Eli's a dick for making Mandy of all people feel guilty about using the body that way when other people have been doing the same thing for the whole show.

  • "Cloverdale" was an interesting episode, but how similar it was to "The Changeling" really drove home how inferior this show is to SG-1.

  • I keep wondering if I would have liked it better if I had any investment in Scott and Chloe, but I really don't.

  • The only thing worse than a love triangle is the whole love rhombus thing Scott and Chloe and Eli and James have going on.  Like the whole "pity the dude the girl sees platonically" thing Eli has going on is so pathetic, and then you add James into the mix and just... ugh.

  • I feel like the show wants me to dislike James but I really don't.  I think she's reacted very reasonably to the way Scott treated her and it ruins his whole character for me.  He's pretty likeable otherwise but then I see her and I remember that he's also a jerk.

  • Eli getting with Anna from Supernatural (I can't remember her name for the life of me) was sort of progress in this regard but whoops she's dead I guess, so back to square one.

  • Literally the only thing that would make it bearable is some kind of poly or OT3 thing, especially if it was with Scott and Chloe and James (James seems to care about Chloe to an interesting degree.  I would expect a show with this level of intelligence to have her be awful to her romantic rival but she's actually really not.  They should get together instead) but that's never gonna happen, obviously.

  • I consistently think of Camille Wray as May.  They're not even that similar, it's just something that happens.

  • Greer has been growing on me.  I think he might actually be my favorite at this point.

  • Rush saving Young was nice.  Maybe they'll be friends and this show will get more enjoyable.  Probably not though.  This show is pretty good about having characters carry around the trauma of previous episodes, and pretty terrible at having them build on positive developments.

I also watched the last couple of episodes of The Flash.  I've missed a few episodes of this season but I'm following it for the most part.

A couple of things:

  • I've always hated how they insisted on calling Earth 2 Harrison Wells "Harry" to distinguish him from their Wells when in fact that guy was never Wells to begin with.  It couldn't have been that much harder to call the guy who was actually Eobard Thawne Eobard or whatever.  That said, I've enjoyed watching them start to think of him as the only Wells.

  • I liked the time travel episode and the twist with Hartley was fun.  I hope to see more of him.

  • Does anyone who has been watching the show actually understand Jay as Zoom?

  • Seriously this is far more tenuous than Eobard's trick with being in the same room as Wells- he was literally holding Jay in his arms.  I hated how everyone was like "It can't be Jay we've seen them together" and then Cisco had a vision and they were just like, "Oh, well, Jay's Zoom then, I guess we hate him now" and made no effort whatsoever to figure out how it was even possible.  I hope a good explanation in store.

  • I'm also curious about the iron mask guy.  My money is on Eddie since we haven't see him yet.

What's everyone else watching?

Understand Jay as Zoom would be streching it, but it must be some time travel thingy...in any case, so far I like how that has worked and in general I am loving the Earth 2 stuff and this new Wells :)

I'm watching Arrow, Legends of tomorrow, Shadowhunters, The magicians and Supernatural too, oh and Grimm and The blacklist. And a few other shows that have more or less just finished for now. There's some new shows I am looking forward too/am curious about. Victoria with Jenna Coleman, Containment and The crown. I'm excited for the new season of Orphan Black too. (God, so much TV....)

I'm not saying it's not possible within the canon- most things seem to be- I'm just saying that they could have had a little more proof that it was possible already, otherwise the characters just lose faith in Jay really fast, you know? But yeah, I like the Earth 2 stuff and Earth 2 Wells especially.

I've been watching Legends of Tomorrow, though I'm not quite caught up. I'll try to check some of the others out.

my theory on Flash, and I've heard other people have this thought too, is that Zoom is a version of Jay from some universe and he travels to different universes stealing the speed force from whichever speedster is there, and so Jay is a good guy, Zoom is an alternate universe Jay who is bad, and iron mask is yet another Jay from another verse

That makes sense. It certainly seems like the most likely explanation, although it'll be interesting if they add in that many alternate universes.

Ohh, good points on both shows. I'm assuming (since Jay mentioned it once) that Zoom time-travels every time you see him with Jay - and he has found a way around the consequences...

*HUGS*

Someone else suggested that Zoom could be Jay from another alternate universe, which seems plausible- but I kind of love the idea of Zoom as Jay either time turner-ing around like Hermione to be in two places at once or coming forward or back from a different time and eye-rolling at his other self. (Because he does have this "wow, you're so lame" attitude to Jay that becomes hilarious if he is Jay)

*squishes you*
