Five days later, my post on Civil War.

In general, I liked a lot of things about this movie, especially compared to AoU.  The departure from supervillains was refreshing.  It was great to have the motivations of so many characters so well fleshed out.  It was interesting and emotionally charged to see both sides of the main issue be at least partially right, but I will say that it wasn't always fun.  I knew from the moment the plot started to be discussed that I wouldn't entirely enjoy seeing characters I like to think of as friends punch each other, and I was right, but it was still a good movie all around.

Some things I liked:
- This movie built up Wanda as a character much better than AoU.  I liked her quite a bit here; especially her reaction to the explosion at the beginning
- In a related dynamic, I really liked how seriously collateral damage was taken in this movie, by the heroes and everyone else.  That was important in terms of Zemo, certainly, but it was also really effective through the lens of Wanda as a character, since her main motivation for most of AoU had been revenge on Tony Stark because of his weapons building
- In general, the way the different revenge plotlines played off each other was very cool
- Redwing
- Though I haven't completely made up my mind what I think of Vision/Wanda, I did enjoy their dynamic here
- I liked this Peter Parker a lot.  It was nice not to go through the whole origin story shtick, and he's very fresh and young
- I liked T'challa even more.  I want a Black Panther movie yesterday
- The side of Sam that Bucky brings out is really interesting
- Sam in general was so great
- I still haven't seen Ant-Man and I still think it's stupid that he has a movie and Black Widow doesn't, but I did find Scott Lang very pleasant and charming; he made for great comic relief
- Speaking of Black Widow, I liked how she played both sides a little there at the end; that's the Natasha I know and love
- There was almost no Bruce/Natasha content, thank goodness
- I really don't care for the whole "Clint has a random family on a farm" thing when they could have done almost anything that wasn't that to flesh out his character in the movies more, but I did enjoy the references in this movie.  When he said he was disappointing his kids... *sigh* ilu Clint
- A lot of people were worried that they were trying to build this friendship between Tony and Steve that just never existed in the MCU, but they didn't do that and the dynamic Steve and Tony did have actually worked very well
- Though I didn't agree with Tony at times, his characterization was very good

Some things I didn't like:
- The flip side of Tony getting such good characterization is that this felt more like an Iron Man movie- or at least an Avengers movie- than a Captain America film
- Seriously so little about this feels like the third act of Steve's story
- He didn't even get that much screentime and pretty much all his scenes with Bucky were in the trailer
- I would say how good the scenes we got were made up for it, but that was a bit mixed bag.  I feel like they went out of their way to reinforce how hetero they both were, which frankly- given the way everyone behind the movie said it was a love story and how they hadn't written it as romance but you could read it that way- made me feel a little betrayed
- As much as I enjoyed every part of the ensemble, put it all together and you get a movie that's a bit... cluttered compared to the other solo movies
- Wow CGI young Tony was unsettling
- I didn't notice this watching the movie, but someone on Tumblr mentioned that the memory technology Tony demonstrates in the beginning would actually have solved a lot of the plot by allowing them to help Bucky understand what had been done to him and maybe prove his innocence, but I guess it's better as a throwaway plot point instead
- Speaking of plot holes and clutter, the idea that there were other Winter Soldiers is not only unnecessary, it undermines basically everything about CAWS and the idea that Howard had made more of the serum in the 2000s undermines basically everything about the MCU since Captain America.  Like there's no way that was a secret.  People knew.  There were trial runs.  There are failed (and/or successful) super serum test subjects running around somewhere
- Super young Aunt May was pretty weird.  They tried to hang a lantern on it by having Tony say she was too young, but it was still weird
- I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Steve/Sharon kiss was the worst.  Nothing about it worked at all
- As pleased as I was to be spared further Bruce/Natasha, so much of this movie would have played out differently if Bruce was there (especially in terms of Ross)
- If everyone in the world was going to be in this movie, why couldn't Nick Fury have showed up too?
- Tony's reaction to Bucky killing his parents worked at first (of course he was going to be furious when he first found out), but eventually it got to be as hypocritical coming from him as everyone thought it was probably going to be
- It's nice that it was Bucky's choice to go into stasis, but it still read a little... off
- As much as I liked this Spiderman, I'm not happy that all the more interesting titles Marvel is teasing- including Black Panther, argh- are being pushed back in favor of another Spiderman movie

All in all I thought it was a good movie and pretty much what I expected going in.

Agreed on so many things!

Oh, to have a scene at any point in the movie where Fury shows up with his "I'm so not taking this shit" expression...

And Bruce being there when General Ross blathered on.

Good point on Sam - he really did seem to have a different side of him come out around Bucky. I wonder why that is? I loved it too.

Yes, Fury in this movie would have been very Disappointed Dad and it would have been great.

The way Sam acted was an interesting choice on the movie's part and I thought it was really clever. I hope we see more of them interacting in the future.
