Jul. 22nd, 2016 11:11 pmSo I just came back from Star Trek Beyond and I enjoyed it very much.
Sofia Boutella was a joy in particular. I loved her in Kingsman and I loved her in this; I hope she has a great career ahead of her. And her character, Jaylah, was really awesome and refreshing. She never ended up in her underwear and the bit where they tell her she'll have to wear the uniform if she joins starfleet was great.
Sulu's family was lovely.
I enjoyed the kind of episode-like feel if the movie, where the crew went on a mission, got in trouble and had to work together to get out of it just like a regular Star Trek episode. I especially liked how they got separated off into pairs we haven't seen interact much so far (Spock and Bones in particular were great).
Even though this was more of an ensemble crew-as-family installment than another Kirk and Spock story, they still had some great moments.
I may have squeaked a little when the Xindi got mentioned. A reboot movie written by someone who's actually familiar with Star Trek shows? Be still my beating heart.
In general this movie just felt more like Star Trek than the other reboots have.
Basically the only thing I didn't like about it was Idris Elba as the villain. His performance was perfectly fine, obviously, he's just an actor that I completely adore and who I would have loved so so so much to see as a major character (if not the lead) on a Star Trek TV show one day, and it's sad that I had to lose that possibility over this.
Anyway, I enjoyed it and I'd definitely recommend going to see it.
