If you could bring back one cancelled show, which would you choose and why? (from [livejournal.com profile] megan_moonlight)

This is a tough one because there have been so many great short-lived and/or otherwise cancelled shows, but it's made a little less tough by the fact that a lot of shows end up lasting just long enough to really go off the rails.

Anyway, to pick just one I might actually go with Stargate Atlantis?  I recently rewatched it, and that definitely plays a part, but Atlantis and SG-1 are among the relatively few long-lived shows that I never thought of as having fallen apart on a larger scale.  There might be a dud episode here or there, but I always enjoyed watching how the universe developed and where the larger plot went next.  And the characters coming and going never bothered me in Stargate the way it does in some shows (not that the writing out of characters couldn't have sometimes been better.  I mean... Elizabeth Weir?  She was never my favorite but wow writers, have some respect), I just loved meeting new people and watching the old ones grow and change.

So anyway, I think Atlantis had a huge amount of potential left after the final season ended, and the characters were so great, and it would be wonderful to see where it would have gone next.

Yes, yes, to all of this. This show had more seasons in it! Ah, I still miss it. I loved the charachters and seeing all their adventures and mishaps.

Yeah, that… My early-twenties fangirl self was so annoyed by how they handled that that I stopped watching SGA. I’ve never actually seen the last two seasons, because I was so pissed that they kept killing off my favourite characters. *lol*

I’ve recently bought the whole show on DVD though and I’m hoping that this time around (with a bit more emotional distance ;) ) I’ll watch it all. I just need to find the time…

I didn't watch SGA until after it was off the air, and I think that improved my viewing experience. It's easier to take that kind of thing in stride when you're looking at it is as a whole, I think. I would have had a lot more of a problem with it if I was following it as it aired.

It's definitely not easy to find the time for these things :)

Yeah, that probably helps. In Weir’s case it probably also helps if you’re a fan of SG1 and are excited to see Sam Carter on your TV again. Unfortunately, SG1 never really interested me. I’ve watched a few episodes with my housemate back in uni, but I was never as attached to the show and the characters as I was with SGA. So having my favourite character replaced with another character from another show I didn’t care about just to get the ratings up or whatever… To say that I was bitter about that is probably an understatement. *lol*

At the moment I’m much more attached to other fandoms though, so it seems like a good time to give SGA another chance.

When I first started watching, I watched a little of both shows and got attached to the SGA characters immediately and didn't like SG-1 anywhere near as much- but when I finally buckled down and just watched SG-1 I came to prefer it- so yeah, for an SG-1 fan it was cool to have Carter come to Atlantis. But in the end I didn't think she worked as well on the show as Weir. If you've seen even a few episodes of SG-1 you probably know that Carter was basically a technological miracle worker, and they really had to dumb her down to keep her from stealing McKay's show- whereas Weir had her own skillset that no one else really filled, so that never happened with her.

And I absolutely get why anyone watching Atlantis who didn't really care about SG-1 would be bitter about what happened :)

Yes, she did. Unfortunately, it just seemed like the writers didn’t really know what to do with the character and her particular skillset. So instead of developing the character they simply replaced her.

The more I’m talking about it, the more I realise I’ll probably be just as annoyed about certain choices TPTB made for the show as I was the first time around. *lol*

I do that too, lol. I'll think to myself, "It's been years, I'm not angry about this anymore." And then I'll start talking about it or thinking about it and I'll realize that actually yeah, I'm still angry about it.
