Date: 2019-05-04 04:15 am (UTC)Favorite Male Character: Meres, with Callan a close second
Favorite Female Character: Liz
Least Favorite Character: Cross
Favorite Ship: Callan/Meres
Favorite Friendship: Callan and Lonely, I guess? (I mean, who's really friends in this series?). I also love it whenever Lonely and Meres (or Callan and Lonely and Meres) have to work together, and it's cropping up in a few of my WIPs, so that's a favorite even if it's mainly in my head.
Favorite Quote: Honestly, it's "You know there's something rather sad, James, about people who keep saying there is nothing wrong with me" from "If He Can, So Could I". From Meres that line always reads to me like the one you quoted from Russian Roulette about "rare self-awareness". To me it says that Meres thinks you're okay in this business as long as you haven't convinced yourself you're okay, and it really informs how I see him as a character.
Worst Character Death (if any): Ramsey, I guess? I'm not really more broken up about it than Goodliffe!Hunter necessarily (Ramsey was a nicer boss, but that did make him a bit boring as a character), but I feel for Callan because of how it happened. When he has to talk about it in "Where Else Could I Go" it really hurts.
This made me so happy you have no idea Moment: Callan and Meres' last scene in "I Never Wanted the Job". There were a lot of wonderful little moments in "The Richmond File" that I would never have imagined getting from the beginning of the series, and those are also way up there- but "I Never Wanted the Job" is just so great. Them lying to Hunter, Hunter knowing it but giving his almost-approval anyway, Toby's enormous grin as they leave... It's just beautiful.
Saddest Moment: Callan asking "Where's Toby?" EW's delivery of that line just kills me, as does the knowledge that we're in for a whole season without Meres.
Favorite Location: LOL I totally love the-section-is-a-junkyard bit in the movie. I'm still thinking about that.
Les Miserables (ended up answering for musical more than anything, with guest appearances from the brick and other versions. Sorry. Blame the miniseries, somehow it's particularly suffering by comparison to the musical in my mind)
Favorite Male Character: Javert, Enjolras
Favorite Female Character: Eponine
Least Favorite Character: idk in the book, Fantine's various assailants? The foreman in the musical is quite repellent. So generally the awful people you're meant to hate. I'm annoyed with Javert in the miniseries so far. David Oyelowo is certainly a good actor but god forbid he be written as anything other than a one note antagonist amirite?
Favorite Ship: Javert/Valjean
Favorite Friendship: Les amis (heh)
Favorite Quote: Uh, to pick from the musical I'm a big of fan "the blood of the martyrs will water the meadows of France!" Excellent line to sing at the top of your lungs when you're five years old.
Worst Character Death (if any): Fantine. Especially in the miniseries. The 1998 movie did it more or less the same way, and it's fair I guess but... goddamn. Can't we sing a pretty song or something?
This made me so happy you have no idea Moment: The bit at the end of 10th anniversary performance of the musical, when they have the 17 different Valjeans singing in their own language and it's A Lot. Les Miz is just so beautiful and so loved and I have a lot of emotions.
Saddest Moment: See Fantine above. I love the revolutionaries and it's sad to see them fail, but at least they knew what they were in for. Eponine too, in a way. Fantine was so full of hope and she just got... crushed.
Favorite Location: The barricades, especially in the musical. I love watching them go up on stage.

Date: 2019-05-05 05:35 am (UTC)Favorite Male Character: Meres, although Callan has grown on me a lot
Favorite Female Character: Joan Mather, the scientist from The Most Promising Girl of Her Year
Least Favorite Character: Cross
Favorite Ship: Callan/Meres
Favorite Friendship: I mean... I guess Callan and Meres count as friends too? Since no one's really friends with each other in this show, I'll change this question to Favorite Platonic Relationship, and for that I'd have to put down... Hunter!Callan and Snell. Their interaction in If He Can, So Could I has so many interesting layers. More than anyone, Snell sees through to the heart of Callan's insecurities and forces Callan to confront them. Callan (like everyone in the Section) despises Snell, but at the same time, relies on him for objective information. It's a fascinating, dangerous relationship, and I wish we'd gotten more of it with Callan as Hunter.
Favorite Quote: Sophia's reply to Callan's attempted justifications in The Little Bits and Pieces of Love: "Your argument does not interest me anymore. I've seen too many people die. One day, I think it will not interest you either." To me, this quote is Mitchell's entire condemnation of the Cold War enterprise.
Worst Character Death: Flo's death in Do You Recognize the Woman? To go through all that, only to have your own side... your own lover... kill you because you might be compromised is beyond cruel. The real clincher for me was her plea to Richmond to take care of her daughter, and his response that "She's my daughter too". Ugh, I'm getting teary-eyed just thinking about it.
This Made Me so Happy You Have No Idea Moment: Callan and Meres fibbing to Hunter in I Never Wanted the Job, then giggling like schoolboys when Hunter lets them off the hook. It's followed closely by that scene in Do You Recognize the Woman? where Meres delightfully teases a handcuffed Callan; I bet those cuffs made it into a later kinky bedroom scene ^_~.
Saddest Moment: Meres crying as he asks brokenly, "Why, David, why?" in Death of a Hunter. At that point, you don't know if Callan will survive or if Meres will have to live with the guilt of causing Callan's torture and death. Seeing the slick, cool-headed Meres all emotional like that... it gave me a lot of feels. Another really sad moment is Callan's despairing line after he earns his way back into the Section: "Where else could I go?"
Favorite Location: Hunter's beautiful mansion in Call Me Sir!, which Callan oh so briefly enjoys during his tenure.
Bonus question! Favorite guest star? Mine is Belukov from Nice People Die at Home. He's so funny and colorful with a lot of great lines, especially the bit about his drinking and his quip at his subordinate, "Your face ripples with good humour like a frozen lake." It's a pity he had to die. He would have made a great archvillain for a season ^_^.

Date: 2019-05-07 04:21 am (UTC)Favorite guest star: the interrogator from "That'll Be the Day" is springs to mind. I find him really interesting- his dynamic with Callan and with the guards, the comparisons suggested between him and Snell, the general way he works. A major theme of the show, that the people on the other side often aren't the kind of cartoonish villains popular in the spy drama at the time but just people doing their job the same way the "good guys" are, really comes across in him, I think.

Date: 2019-05-05 03:31 am (UTC)Favorite Male Character: Eighth Doctor
Favorite Female Character: Sarah Jane
Least Favorite Character: I'm at the point where I really don't remember the bits of this show that bothered me, so I can't think of anyone.
Favorite Ship: Jenny/Vastra
Favorite Friendship: Most of the doctors and their companions, especially 11 and Amy and Rory.
Favorite Quote: I really like Martha Jones' little speech when she leaves the Doctor about how cool she's learned she is. It's pretty reflective of what I love about the show, that someone (reasonably) ordinary can go out into the wider universe and come back feeling the opposite of smaller, even when they had a pretty bad time like she did.
Worst Character Death (if any): Unless we're counting Torchwood as part of Doctor Who, nothing comes to mind. Like I said I really don't remember the bad bits with this show. If Torchwood counts, all of them.
This made me so happy you have no idea Moment: Pretty stoked about the Master and then the Doctor regenerating into ladies!
Saddest Moment: It's almost always sad when a companion goes.
Favorite Location: The Tardis, of course

Least Favorite Character: Hook
Favorite Ship: Rumbelle, Aurora/Mulan
Favorite Friendship: Rumple and Jefferson
Favorite Quote: Uh... really can't remember well enough
Worst Character Death (if any): Again, can't think of one
This made me so happy you have no idea Moment: The scene that still springs to mind after all this timee is in Skin Deep when Rumple turns Gaston into a rose and gives to Belle. Just his classic mix of charm and sadism there lol
Saddest Moment: Any time Rumple and Belle are fighting or at odds, which got to be so often that I just gave up
