Date: 2019-10-18 01:36 am (UTC)My favorite male character: Artie
My favorite season: S3
My favorite episode: The Night of the Vipers
My favorite cast member: Ross Martin is the one I've seen in the most other things. I'm a big fan of Michael Dunn too
My favorite ship: Artie/Jim
A character I'd die defending: No one really. I do sometimes feel defensive of Jim, in the sense that fics sometimes make him much more of a jerk than I think he is and I'm not sure what that's about
A character I just can't sympathize with: Manzeppi (is that even how it's spelled? idk). Like Loveless is a super fun villain and for a bad guy who got multiple episodes Manzeppi is just boring. I don't know what he even wants, so...
A character I grew to love: Loveless! Like I said he's a super fun villain. I always smile when he shows up
My anti-OTP: I'm not into Jim with anyone other than Artie, but since the fandom is tiny and nothing else is anywhere near as popular it's hard to feel strongly about it

Date: 2019-10-18 01:39 am (UTC)My favorite male character: Paul
My favorite season: I'm almost tempted to say S3 because a lot of people say the show took a major downtown in the third season while I actually really liked it, but probably S2. I've seen some shows do a full season on one case, but I've never seen one go past that into the trial, and how figuring out whodunnit is not actually the end
My favorite episode: I really couldn't tell you. It's hard for me to keep track of specific episodes in a show like this. Maybe the finale of S1, though? That was heavy
My favorite cast member: Olivia Coleman
My favorite ship: Paul/Beth, which is tragically rare
A character I'd die defending: Ellie
A character I just can't sympathize with: Ellie's husband (what's his name?). Ugh
A character I grew to love: Chloe was a bit annoying in the beginning, but her overall arc was really interesting
My anti-OTP: Ellie and her husband (what's his name???)

Date: 2019-10-18 01:40 am (UTC)My favorite male character: Mycroft
My favorite season: S1
My favorite episode: A Study in Pink
My favorite cast member: Rupert Graves, I think
My favorite ship: I guess Mystrade but... I'm honestly down with most ships here
A character I'd die defending: No one really
A character I just can't sympathize with: Mary? I don't hate her the way some people do, but I think on a writing level the show majorly dropped the ball in terms of making her a sympathetic (and coherent) character
A character I grew to love: Lestrade. I was surprised by the series' take on him (in comparison to most versions of the character) so he didn't work for me immediately, but he came to
My anti-OTP: Again, I don't really have a problem with anything

Date: 2019-10-22 01:03 am (UTC)My favorite male character: James
My favorite season: 3, since it's the only one I've seen lol
My favorite episode: "Growing Up" I think
My favorite cast member: Anthony Valentine :)
My favorite ship: James/Harriet
A character I'd die defending: Eh... nobody. I feel like I'm only really defensive of characters who get hate. Can't have hate if there's no fandom
A character I just can't sympathize with: Again, can't really think of anyone
A character I grew to love: That clerk. How much he dislikes James is jarring at first since it seems unearned, but I've come to find it weirdly charming. Does he have a name that I'm missing btw? I've been thinking about writing a third party POV fic where he sees James and Harriet dancing around a relationship and Does Not Like It
My anti-OTP: Well, I don't like Dr. Moody much, so him and Harriet. I'm hoping if I had seen the earlier seasons something would have endeared him to me, but as it is he's just sort of a dude who shows up, negs her a bit, and then leaves every once in a while

Date: 2019-10-24 07:46 am (UTC)"Growing Up" is also my favorite episode, because it showcases James at his finest on cross, and the story itself is very interesting and deals with an issue - sex and masculinity - that's important to me.
The clerk is named William (Bill) Corletti. He's introduced in an earlier season, and no, they never give a reason why he dislikes James on sight. So I'd love to read your take, hehehe ^_~. It's worth checking out seasons 1-2 for the backstory on Harriet's career, her professional relationship with Sir John Gallagher, and her romance with Dr. Ian Moody, who's not quite as bad as he seems in season 3. Remember when this show was made... it's the early 70's feminist movement, and I think Moody is meant to represent the typical benignly sexist man of the era. He and Harriet struggle at first, but he eventually learns to respect her and actually moves his medical practice to be closer to her, when that was extremely rare for dual career couples. So yeah, he's not terrible, though I'm still annoyed that the writers wouldn't let Harriet/James get together. Maybe it was too transgressive for the time, Harriet being the older, more powerful woman and all.
Btw, there's several episodes in the early seasons involving espionage, which would make great crossover fodder with Callan. Check out "No Flowers by Request" and "A Nice Straightforward Treason." Clifford Rose shows up in the latter as a creepy prison doctor.

You're definitely right that Moody isn't bad for a man of his time, he's just... also boring. But obviously I was missing some history on him, and that all sounds interesting. At some point I'll try to watch the whole series. It's such a shame that they wouldn't let her and James end up together. But that age difference would be a pretty big thing even now, let alone back then.
LOL. Were creepy doctors just Clifford Rose's thing? I'll try to check that one out.

Date: 2019-10-26 08:45 pm (UTC)Sorry, I made a mistake. The other spy episode is "To Help an Old School Friend", not "No Flowers by Request". In the former, Harriet investigates the mysterious death of an old classmate's son, who was involved in sensitive research that drew the attention of British security. It's a dark episode for Justice (1971), which means it fits right in with Callan. I like it because we see Harriet's courage in standing up to forces that could very well threaten her life.
LOL, Clifford Rose is totally typecast! Just take a look at his filmography. Half of his roles were him playing an evil interrogator - most notably, Sturmbannfuhrer Ludwig Kessler in two TV shows. Now that you mention it, that could make for a cool crossover with Horst Mohn in Colditz...
