Favorite birds of a feather flock together couple:

Not really my thing, I have to say.  Take the Marvel universe, for example.  I can see where people are coming from, liking Clint/Natasha or Fitzsimmons, but though I don't dislike those pairings, I don't really ship them either.  Even if the two characters I ship are ultimately pretty similar, there has to be some kind of balance between strengths and weaknesses for me to like the pairing.  Someone who is outgoing and someone who isn't.  Someone who takes everything seriously and someone who is a little more carefree.  Clint and Natasha are ultimately pretty different, but they still have a very similar core as characters, and that makes it hard for me to see them.  Much is made of Fitz and Simmons basically being one person, and I was pretty floored when the show started to push a romantic plotline for them- at least for Fitz.  I thought he liked Skye, for one thing, and his relationship with Simmons seemed very brother/sister-y in the beginning.  Also, I do much prefer her with Triplet.

I do prefer her with Triplet. I think he is confused and scared of Skye's rejection (head-canon) and Simmons is safe, you know? Plus, he does love her to pieces and I think she already knows that. I know he had a crush on her at one point, but I liked it when he crushed on Skye - because, you know, he already HAS her. But I get the jealousy thing, I really do. Still, that being said, they are more brother and sister to me. I prefer to ship 'the science twins' with other people...

Your head-canon makes sense to me, except in those last couple eps, which totally portrayed Fitz as being all sad because he'd always loved Simmons and he got friend-zoned. Which was not the vibe I'd gotten for the whole rest of the series.

I mean, he can totally be jealous of Triplet and still see Simmons as more of a sibling than anything. Just because his feelings were platonic doesn't mean he can't feel threatened by someone else liking her. But it seemed like the writers didn't agree.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised at this point. According to TV and movies, romantic feelings are literally the only reason a guy does anything where a girl is involved. Ever. I guess I just hoped for a lighter touch than we got in those last few eps.
