Check out this awesome article about fan culture and why it's so unfortunate that reporters keep asking actors about fanfiction.  It has some interesting statistics and thoughts about why so much slash fic gets written.  I'll warn diehard fans that Benedict Cumberbatch is quoted in a less than awesome light- if you're sensetive, be ready.

Also, Orlando Jones gets nod, which is nice.  He may not be able to make up for all the actors being really hostile about fanfiction out there, but sometimes it seems like he's trying.

That was a fantastic read, and I agree with pretty much everything that article was saying about fan culture and the dismissive, rather intrusive way the media has approached the subject. It's unfortunate how this continues to come up again and again, especially when it comes from the misconception of what fandom is and why fanworks are important.

I agree with so much of it to. And fanworks are so important. Sooner or later I think that's going to be recognized by people who don't produce them, but it's hard being in this period before it is.

This is a gorgeous article - and one from an obvious fan's perspective! I've read many articles about fans and fandom. Some from a sheerly ignorant pov, some from a pov that IS trying to understand (and in doing so, they openly denounce those 'not willing to do their research and condemning art before exploring said art') and then there are articles like this one.

Yeah. I get tired of hearing from people who don't love fandom or understand what fanworks are about. Pieces like this one are really important.
