Favorite ship
Although if you divided all my favorite pairings into types they would be pretty overwhelmingly slash, I actually like het, femslash, and various OT3's sometimes too. My favorite slash pairing at the moment is overwhelmingly Jim/Artie from The Wild Wild West, and since I'm pretty sure I've mentioned that in about half these posts, I'm just going to talk about my favorite het and femslash pairings, and my favorite OT3 instead.
My favorite het ship at the moment, as we discussed on "Day 20", is Belle/Rumpelstiltskin from Once Upon a Time. See, when I first found out that fanfiction was a thing I was reading het- but not canon het. I liked May/December type relationships and good girl/emo bad boy type relationships. I just dipped my toe into slash at first- only reading teen rated or lower- and when I finally dove in it was sort of an accident- somebody hadn't labeled their NC-17 fic very well, or at all- but to continue with the metaphor I never really planned to swim back after I decided I liked the waters- but every once and a while I'll find a pairing that so perfectly hits all those old buttons that it resets me to factory settings. Rumbelle is such a ship. In the name of all the tragic ships I've liked before it and never seen come to fruition, I really hope this one ends in happily ever after.
My favorite femslash is definitely Myka Bering/"H.G." Wells from Warehouse 13. Femslash can be sort of thin on the ground unless you're dealing with a girl powered show like Once Upon a Time- otherwise, even when there is a femslash pairing there will usually also be a great big slash one there to distract me with pretty (case in point? Stargate SG-1). But Myka/H.G. sort of is the slash pairing of Warehouse 13, and it had me from all the longing glances and that bit with H.G. saving Myka by carrying her away with grappling gun. Dreamy sigh. And then Joanne Kelly went and told everybody that she was playing Myka as in love with H.G., so on top of everything else my pairing was telling me, for once, that I wasn't crazy to see all the chemistry I saw.
My favorite OT3 is Ava/Boyd/Raylan from Justified. I took a lot longer to warm up to the idea of an OT3 than a slash pairing. Eliot/Parker/Hardison from Leverage held my hand through the transition, and I maintain that the show had to end when it did, or the writers would have had to admit that that OT3 was happening, and most Americans aren't ready for that. I still love it, but I like Ava/Boyd/Raylan best. I didn't really like Ava with Raylan when that was a thing, and though I like Boyd and Ava together I was honestly so astonished that they were even speaking to each other that I didn't really notice they were falling in love until it had already happened, so I can't rightly say I was shipping that either- and though Boyd/Raylan really should be a perfect slash ship for me, it just didn't really work. Boyd and Raylan have such a complex dynamic that slash writers are often in danger of undercutting everything that makes it great by making it about sex instead. So though I'll enjoy a Justified fic about pretty much any pairing- or no pairing at all- if it's well written, I had trouble finding something I would really call a ship. But when I discovered this OT3, it all came together. All the components that never really worked for me on their own jelled into awesomeness. It's really perfect.

Date: 2014-02-06 11:51 am (UTC)I love May/December in slash, well I suppose I love it regardless but as I mostly read slash so that’s where I recognize it most. I don’t watch Once upon a time, but I know enough to see the appeal of Belle/Rumpelstilskin and I did enjoy the fic you recced me. I enjoy reading fic where there is some kind of uneven keel; age, status, whatever. I feel like my factory setting is slash, but I do venture beyond it, though rarely.
Your mention of SG-1 reads as Jack/Daniel or Jack/Sam to me, and here I’m the opposite. You’d think I would be all over Jack/Daniel, but I actually prefer Jack/Sam for whatever reason.
Well at least in canon. I haven’t read any Jack/Sam, but I have read a few Jack/Daniel stories. I suppose it has to do with the fact that I was not that fanish about SG-1 as I was with SGA.
I really like Myka/H.G as well, though I haven’t read any fic and I stopped watching the show during the break in season 4 (perhaps I should give it another go). They have tons of chemistry; you are definitely not crazy there! I watched this show believing these two were in love with each. I loved the rescue with the grappling gun as well, what a moment!
I don’t have a favourite OT3 but I do read some stories from time to time. I can see the Eliot/Parker/Hardison thing even though I never watched all of Leverage. I loved Parker/Hardison though.

Date: 2014-02-06 11:51 pm (UTC)The SG-1 mention actually refers to Jack/Daniel and Sam/Janet, which is the femslash pairing. I'm not a huge Jack/Daniel shipper- I like Daniel with basically anyone, het or slash; I loved Daniel with Vala too, and I'll read fic where he's with Cameron, or Sam, or Sha're in an A.U. where they save her, or Teal'c, anyone- but Jack/Sam never did anything for me. So yeah, we're opposites here- I liked SGA as a show, but I was never into it fannishly. I just couldn't see McShep, even though McKay/Keller never worked for me either. Weird how it's always different, huh?
I liked Parker/Hardison too, it's just that the show itself seemed to be leaning in a very OT3 direction, especially toward the end- in that Eliot would always be grouped with Parker and Hardison, despite the fact that this would make him a third wheel- and yet he never read like a third wheel to me.

Date: 2014-02-07 02:08 pm (UTC)I find it fascinating and slightly mysterious how the whole being-fanish and shipping thing works; I can recognize clear lines and trends in what I like and don’t like, but there are always something that sneaks in that doesn’t really fit in with the others and takes me by surprise. I wonder if there is a defining moment I just can’t grasp that draws the line and dictates which shows I’m fansih about or not. Also I know there are plenty of pairings I see and like, like Sam/Janet or Sam/Jack that I have no need to go in search of fanfic for.
I might have to check out Leverage again and watch what I haven’t to check this OT3 out.

Date: 2014-02-06 02:32 pm (UTC)And YESYESYES to Rumple/Belle. Those two make my heart go pitty-pat and I'm NOT a hetter!!
As for OT3, I've never seen Justified, but I've fallen into the TardisTrio!trap of Amy/Eleven/Rory, lol!! For obvious reasons...*headdesk*
Such marvelous ships!!

Date: 2014-02-07 01:48 am (UTC)Oh gosh honey, this resonates it with SO much. This is sooo the way I think of things -- like there's a threshold and it gets pushed higher and higher the more smut I find, until I think nothing but that level will satisfy me, and then something comes along like Rumbelle and resets it, and I don't know even what pushes it pushes...the sweetness maybe? The imbalance of power? The fairytale setting? The bad guy who is actually an anti-hero and who actually treats her well, in the end? All of it probably!

I so rarely fall for a ship that's actually CANON, and has hope! ♥
