Has there ever been a character you at first really didn't like, but then they grew on you? (from [livejournal.com profile] whimsicalnixie)

I've had more than just one of these, to be sure.  I often find replacement characters who come in after another has died or been written out hard to get attached to, but I almost always warm to them in the end.

Probably the best example is Ezri Dax on Deep Space Nine.  I could not have been more bitter about what happened to Jadzia, and Ezri seemed like such a poor substitute- but once I gave her a chance I thought she was actually quite lovely.

Title: Plus One
Fandom: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Pairing/Characters: Bashir/Garak, Original Characters
Summary: Julian works in a hospital on Cardassia after the war and learns some new things.
Rating: PG or PG-13
Length: Medium (6,232 words)
Disclaimer: These characters aren't mine.
Notes/Warnings: This makes some assumptions about Cardassian courtship that aren’t necessarily supported by the canon, but I just wanted to write a fic where Garak and Bashir's relationship was kind of a quintessential Cardassian courtship; everything else I just made up as I went along.
Excerpt: “How are you, Garak?” Julian asked when he sat down. Complicated though things had been between them ever since Elina’s engagement, he was still happy to see his friend whenever he did. In truth, Garak had been cool with him since before the engagement- he had been cool with him since he came to Cardassia- but it wasn’t until after the engagement that Julian finally realized the indefinable something that had been missing from their friendship since they both left Deep Space Nine was that Garak was no longer flirting with him

I've also been rewatching DS9, but since my DS9 rewatch has been mainly Garak episodes it's going quite a bit faster and I'm still in S1 of Voyager.  And maybe it's something to do with my Garak redux DS9 rewatch, but I have to say that
I actually kind of feel sorry for Seska.

I mean, yeah, she teamed up with the Kazon and that wasn't cool and I know she does a lot of weird things later on, but think about it.  There she was, doing her bit for Cardassia and pretending to be a Bajoran and informing on the Maquis, and suddenly she's on the other side of the galaxy.  And yeah, they're all on the other side of the galaxy, but she's surrounded by people who aren't exactly going to be kind to her if they find out who she really is.

And I'm pretty sure self preservation is one of the top Cardassian virtues, so from her point of view she totally made the right call.

I'm just saying.

So, a fic rec I got earlier this week made me rediscover Bashir/Garak.  I just want to say that as much as I usually love how much variety there is in the different fics for a particular ship, there's something so adorable and comforting about the fact that most of the stories for this couple are more or less the same story.

Favorite title sequence

Er... Profit?  Actually, I love a lot of title sequences, but Profit's was just so bizarre that I fell in love with it right away.  It starts out with this lovely and dramatic synth-y music, and then suddenly there's some guy yowling.  It's just this little slice of strangeness in the middle of whatever is going on on the show, and the images they chose to use have something so very American Psycho about them.  It's a great title sequence.

That said, I'll always love the Voyager theme music best.  It isn't the most entertaining title sequence, but when I hear that music I go to my happy place.  Deep Space Nine had great music too, and I have so many good memories of both.

Favorite childhood show

This is definitely Star Trek.  I can't remember a time during my formative years where either reruns or new episodes of a series of Star Trek weren't on, and it was definitely my big love throughout my childhood and adolescence.  Though I don't think there was ever an incarnation of Trek that I didn't stop whatever I was doing to watch when it's time slot- rerun or otherwise- came on, Voyager was definitely my favorite and Janeway will always be my captain, and my hero, and I love her courage and her stubbornness, her brilliance and her flaws, very much.

That said, I don't believe there is a series of Star Trek that didn't inspire me to ask important questions, teach me valuable lessons about human nature- and weakness- and generally encourage me to reach for the stars.
