So I just came back from Star Trek Beyond and I enjoyed it very much.

Some of my favorite parts )

Anyway, I enjoyed it and I'd definitely recommend going to see it.

My thoughts on The Blacklist finale, at last.

Also I'd like to take this time to reccomend Crossing Lines to anyone looking for something new to watch.  I'm almost done with S2 and I've heard the quality really drops in S3, but I've loved the first two seasons.  It isn't a perfect show, but it's a crime series that's actually very innovative, the characters are great, and for someone as weak for team-as-family tropes as I am it really hits all my buttons all the time.

I keep telling myself that I'll do a post about all my shows soon, but with all of them having finales at different times I keep putting it off.  And anyway, with some of them- like The Blacklist- I want to wait until the end of the season to see how I feel just because everything is crazy right now.

Lucifer at least is over already (but picked up for another season).  Since I basically inhaled that show despite all my complaints I feel like I'd better talk about it some more.  I'm still annoyed that they took such an interesting premise and did a run-of-the-mill procedural show with it- but I guess it's a good procedural show?  All the characters are really fun, and one thing I love about it is that if the show teases that something dramatic is going to happen, it's going to happen in that episode or the next one, not five episodes later when they're finally ready to move the seasonal arc along like a lot of shows do.  And I feel like there's room in what mythology there is for it to grow a bit more, so... we'll see what the next season brings.

I just started watching Crossing Lines.  I've only seen four episodes, but I like it so far.  I'm wondering where exactly it airs because I'd never heard of it before at all and it's had like three seasons.

I'll also be watching the third season of The Musketeers in June, probably, and I'm looking forward to that.  I've missed it.

Five days later, my post on Civil War.

My thoughts... )

All in all I thought it was a good movie and pretty much what I expected going in.

potentiality_26: (agents of shield)
I just saw Captain America Civil War.  I'll do a more detailed post on it on Sunday or something, once I have my thoughts in order, but for now I have to get one thing off my chest:
In the long and glorious history of completely unnecessary and out of left field hetero kisses, the one between Steve and Sharon was a humdinger.  Peggy just died, Steve just learned that Sharon was related to her, their last personal conversation was about Peggy and the things she knew... but sure, they were just boiling with sexual tension that whole time, absolutely.  And it was almost worse because there wasn't even a romantic subplot.  Like I didn't want a romantic subplot, but taking out that kiss would have no noticeable effect on the story, so  Why.  Was.  It.  There???  People in my theatre made the funniest 'hmming' noises.  I think even people who normally dig the whole "attractive white man + attractive white woman = equals love obviously" equation were WTF-ing over this... thing.

Also I'm working on a couple of super fluffy fanfics right now and I have no idea what to call them.  Normally I go for song lyrics when I'm at a loss, but when combing through my music over the last few days I realized that most of my music is of the melancholy and/or overwrought variety.  Can anyone recommend some just really happy love songs?

Very "cotton candy and rainbows"-type quotes about love might be useful too, if anyone knows any.

I watched a couple of episodes of Lucifer because I had to know.  It's not a bad show by any means, and I found it entertaining, but I stand by my original point and I have some issues with it.

No spoilers really, but I'm putting my thoughts under a cut all the same )

I watched some of Shadowhunters too.  I've missed a couple episodes so I can't really judge it but my feelings are sort of... mixed?  Like it's certainly pretty, the ideas are interesting, and Malec is cool- but it's weird for me to see a show where I don't recognize a single actor, and I find the writing quality a bit low.

Also, I have questions about Jace and Clary:

Spoilers for the last couple episodes )

I've also been spoiled about what happened in the Sleepy Hollow finale.  It's put an end to what desire I had to ever get back into the show, which is sad.  I'll always miss the first season.  It was so good.

potentiality_26: (heroes)
So I got caught up on Legends of Tomorrow.  I don't really have anything specific to say, but I'm enjoying it.  I feel like it has similar appeal to Angel and spin-offs like that.  I would like to see them travel further into the past more often, and while I get why the Savage plotline is really all there is I think I'd like it if it was more episodic as well- make it more Doctor Who-like.  (Speaking of Doctor Who, it's so nice to see Arthur Darvill again)

I was mainly excited for this show because of him and Sara but the rest of cast are great too.  I will say that I never loved Snart the way everyone seems to.  Like I don't hate him or even dislike him, he's cool and everything, I just... he's such a wildly popular character and I never completely understood why.  Still, he's grown on me quite a bit in this show.

I thought I'd give an update on how SGU is going for me.  Spoilers through 2x08 (if you haven't watched it still but care for some reason).

Some thoughts, as before I'm pretty critical of the show )

I also watched the last couple of episodes of The Flash.  I've missed a few episodes of this season but I'm following it for the most part.

Spoilers for the most recent episodes )

What's everyone else watching?

So, I've mentioned before that I periodically try to watch Stargate Universe, right?  Well I've recently given it another shot and I'm maybe halfway through S1 and-

My thoughts, which are not always positive )

Anyway, I soldier on.  Are there any good episodes I should keep an eye out for going forward?

potentiality_26: (musketeers)
So I've had the box set of The Parasol Protectorate series on my bookshelf for a while and I've sort of been putting off reading it and I started like three days ago and I'm almost done (I will be by tomorrow).  Oh my god it's so good.  I'm such a mess right now.

I know I've been spoiled by it and seriously how am I supposed to read books that aren't this clever and charming and full of LGBT characters and awesome relationships?  Luckily there seems to be a follow up book series, so I won't be completely bereft.

Has anybody on my flist also read it?  I'd love someone to talk to about my feelings, which are immense.

I watched The Blacklist premiere but I don't have much to say other than I'm glad it's back and it was awesome.

Has anybody been watching Sleepy Hollow?  It kind of lost me last season and I'm wondering if I should give the new one a try.

Is there anything new you guys are excited for/enjoying?  I'm thinking about checking out Quantico, but otherwise I'm not too excited by the look of anything.

Thought I'd do a post about what I've watched recently.

Justified S6 )

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries S1 )

Ripper Street S3 )

I guess we should be getting new seasons of stuff pretty soon.  I'm looking forward to more of The Blacklist, but that's pretty much all I'm still keeping up with.  Is there anything new that looks good?  No trailers have caught my eye so far.

potentiality_26: (castle)
It was pretty hit or miss as far as remakes go (Illya got a personality transplant, right?  It wasn't just me?) but it was also a fun movie and I enjoyed it.

I wish I could track down a post I saw on tumblr back when the trailer first came out that said that Henry Cavill must be the straightest man on the planet because despite all the subtext they couldn't seen any slashy chemistry at all.  Having seen the movie (and as a Napolean/Illyra shipper from way back), I have to say that it's really, really true.  I did not pick up a single vibe.

So I watched Jupiter Ascending again, and yep, I still love that movie.  I had this dorky smile on my face through the whole thing.

It had a trailer for The Man From U.N.C.L.E. on it, and this was the first I'd heard about them making a The Man From U.N.C.L.E. movie, and I feel sort of resentful because I would have watched the trailer differently if I'd known that was what it was when it started.  And I'm aware that I could probably find the trailer on youtube and watch it again now, but that seems like a lot of work and I'd rather just be quietly bitter for a while longer.

I'm caught up with Britain on The Musketeers because the BBC keeps having hiatuses and so far BBCA hasn't- who knows if that will last.

I was all caught up on The Blacklist until today, and I should watch the new episode tommorrow.  I missed Forever and Agent Carter last week because for whatever reason I could not get reception on that station for anything.  I watched both this week and went back and watched the episode of Forever that I missed.  I haven't been able to get up the energy for Agent Carter, though.  I just don't love it, and the kind of militant "watch this show or it will be your fault it failed" attitude I've seen over the internet about it is making it even harder to watch, frankly.  I don't even really have much to say about it.

The Blacklist )

Forever )

The Musketeers )

I also watched Death Comes to Pemberley recently.  Could it have been much more like fanfic?  I mean, I knew it was.  I knew it was a mystery P.D. James wrote with characters from Pride and Prejudice- but I don't mean the general premise.  I mean all the angst and the unnecessary romantic misunderstandings (which I assure you I ate up with a spoon).  Fanfic, I tell you.

Has anyone been watching Sleepy Hollow?  How's it doing?

potentiality_26: (agents of shield)
Gotta say, I thought it was great.  We're talking pure trashy joy.

Some thoughts, not really spoilery, but- )

Anyway, I loved it.  I guess it's something everyone has to make up their own mind about.

I had to sit through fifteen minutes of dudes talking about the superbowl and generally screwing around, but I'm pretty sure it was worth it because it was SO good.  OMG I missed this show so much.

Some thoughts )

How excited am I for next week?  So excited.  We might be getting closure on certain plotlines at long last.  *dances*

If you haven't heard of it, it's the first book released by Big Bang Press, which publishes (or was made to publish, I guess) original fiction by fanfiction writers.

It was funny and a generally enjoyable read, and it had a racially diverse cast (the kind you just don't see much of in the fantasy genre) and a couple of really cute romances.

I highly reccomend it, and the press really deserves as much attention as it can get.

Watched Agent Carter and Forever.

The promo stuff for Agent Carter is really weird.  First they talk about how "she lost the love of her life" and that annoys me because what I liked so much about Peggy's arc in CATFA and CATWS is that she had a life without him, and a pretty good one.  And then the show comes along and is all, "we must do the tragic struggling hero thing."  Then there's this voice-over guy that comes on saying soemthing about "TV's newest female weapon" which is bizarre.  I don't mind the female part, there's no reason not to mention it when it is, in fact, noteworthy- I just feel like this "newest" suggests some profusion when that is in fact not the case, and weapon is just... an awkward choice.  As with last week, I like the show but I don't love it.

Boy, but I do love Forever.  It was a great episode.  I've heard that it was a surprise that it was even picked up for a whole season, so I'm worried there won't be a season 2.  Anyway, I'm having fun while it lasts.

I'm going to try to watch Galavant soon, but so far I haven't found the time.

potentiality_26: (castle)
I like it so far, but I wouldn't say I loved it.  The writers seem to be trying just a little bit too hard to sound old timey, and it comes out sort of... clunky.  I also particularly disliked the transition between S1 and S2.  I like it when there's some time between seasons (rather than the next one just picking up minutes after the last left off), but I don't like it when a whole bunch of important things happened off screen in between, but only ever get sketchily explained after the fact.

A couple of thoughts )

So anyway, that was something to do for a while.
